For me 30 years has flown by.

This was how my rig looked in 1983. And yes, that is a 'tape' drive aka Datasette. No 5 1/4" or 8" floppy for me. Long load times baby. Kids don't know how good they have it these days.

My first analog cell phone just like this one from 20 years ago. Had mine installed in a 1994 Mitsubishi Eclipse Turbo.

Car phones were the $h!T. Minutes were like $2 each.

Financial data was sent through the mail, talk about security risk, on tape.

Man times have changed.

It is a budget tablet

It's only $29 less than the original iPad mini was yet everyone bashed the mini for its bad display, how does this get a pass? At least the mini came out back last year when no other 7 or 8 inch had HD displays because the tech wasn't there. No excuse for this one.

I think you are looking for a fight where there isnt one. First of all I didnt have an issue with the mini and neither did/do millions of others. Second, this is a full blown Windows 8 tablet. Third, it has 32 base storage and numerous other features. Fourth, I cant believe I am typing all this because I dont really care.

This post wasnt to put the Venue Pro up on a high horse, it just happen to be the example in the pic. This post is more about tech now in general compared to a few years back with similar items. Really not sure why the Mini was dragged in, this isnt even the forum for that. There is one where there is a big thread where people are bashing the new retina mini(and it is even more expensive!). Some people just like to complain it seems

To be fair, I think the iPad really needs to be put up there instead of the dell. I mean, tablets were a niche market before the iPad. Sure, the original was laughed at but by the time the iPad 2 came around, it really changed everyone's views on what a tablet can do. By the time the iPad 3 came along, it was already beginning to replace computers for everyday consumers.

The fact that Apple catalyzed this change in such a short period of time is astonishing. I'm just impressed with "think different".

I feel blessed to have gone through all these technological changes from the "ground up".

I get the point you're trying to make with regard to the advancement of technology in tablets, but I would argue that you could have used any number of better examples than the market-irrelevant Windows tablets. (Hell, the only real reason MS is selling any now is largely due to fire-sale pricing at Best Buy for $199.99, and that is last year's Surface RT, not the new Surface 2)!

How about the Motorola Xoom compared to the Nexus 7 or 10, or the original iPad compared to the new iPad Air? I think it's safe to say that more innovation and evolution have happened in the Android and iOS spaces than Windows Mobile.

I like the storage being 40 GB on the SS. What happened to those type of numbers and going down to 32 GB?
That was a 40 GB hard drive--moving media. A slow one at that. As in, susceptible to damage from shock and slower than crap. It also was a small capacity in 2006 for a Windows XP machine.

Althat highlights to me is how bats*** insane Microsoft were introducing Windows RT and the Surface RT in the quantities and prices they did (back in the day).

Why does RT even exist given the capabilities of the Atom tablets? Too much sacrifice going to Arm with windows IMO.

I think the point is the price he is showing along with the specs.

I can beat that. I have actually programmed in FORTRAN using punch cards. Ouch.

In any case, in the next 5 years voice control will become more accurate and the speech required will be less unnatural. Additionally I think home appliances with WiFi will be ubiquitous. It be nice if somebody came up with truly secure (NSA-proof) communications and if web sites & e-mail routinely encrypted everything.

After that I look forward to self-driving cars and domestic robots.

ah shucks that's nothing. I used to enter the boot loader in machine code using the front panel switches just to get the damn thing to boot!

Anyway back on track. It's scary how far we've come but also how little has changed over 30 years. I call it a "variation on a theme" - it's the same thing we were doing 30 years ago, only faster, bigger/smaller, cheaper. I think it's great and I love what I can do on my S3 and soon.

It's all evolution. Still waiting for the revolution.

Not to mention, the Mini with Retina is thinner, lighter, smaller, has a bigger battery, and a much sharper screen. Much more impressive hardware than the Dell, and the software helped make tablets a viable alternative.

Both of these tablets run x86 processors and full desktop operating systems thats why they're there. It would be a bad comparison to compare an ARM tablet.

I find it kind of funny that people seem to be getting upset over the fact that Windows tablets are the ones in the graphic.

I agree, but zbarvian is always on the Apple agenda. I thought nothing of which was there. I took it for what it was. I got the point, some saw Apple being slighted, lol.

I get the point. I just think that iPad better represents the point as it is more iconic than that Dell, most of us probably don't recognize.

Totally, software differences really needs to be given credit to....

That makes sense.

My opinion... or hope... is that our phones will just be put into a ultrabook type form for batteries, large monitor support and keyboard. Similar to the Motorola Atrix... but better. Or maybe connect with a thunderbolt type connector and be a full featured PC. We're almost there with the second one, especially with the Venue Pro.

With that answer, no...i dont think you got the point. Who cares what is more iconic? I dont have any Dell products of all they make and i recognize the name and recognize that is a tablet and recognize the specs listed along w/ the price difference.

Sorry, you missed the point completely and just want to have your Apple preference say.
