Second time I've seen this. Before, it was the original iPhone in Entourage. This time... Weeds. I got a kick out of it.
Noticed this while I was watching the episode that aired tonight.

LOL I just watched this... I thought something was weird about his phone because I thought it was an iPhone but wasn't sure.

I also like how he can send MMS haha.

Maybe when they were doing the shoot the phone was in the wrong position and he didn't realize that it was upside down when he put it to his ear. The producers likely said, "You know what, it's wrong, but the scene was good so we'll keep it."

They do this so they dont have to pay royalities to Apple for using their product. The hand placement covers the Apple logo when the hold it. You will see it A LOT on TV, and in movies. See: Sex in the City Movie.

good point however I wonder what's the reason we have seen this numerous times, your explanation is 100% valid but what would be the reason for it happening numerous times?? I don't think anyone I know has picked up my phone and held it upside down, i don't know it just seems odd that this is a reoccuring trend in tvshows/movies..

They wouldn't have to pay Apple royalties, if anything, Apple would be paying them for product placement. Since Apple doesn't want to pay for product placement, they hide the logo so they don't get free advertising.

Right right, got that mixed up. You're right. Other way around.

Another theory was they just did it so you would notice it. Movies and TV are full of these inconsistencies and a LOT of them are due to the actors and crew members just entertaining themselves and saying "hey, let's put this thing upside down or backwards as a little treat for the attentive viewer."

Of course they say it a lot cooler than that... and then they go do a bunch of coke and set trends and just be generally awesome.

so whenever someone has a product label in a movie or TV that you can clearly see, they block it out/blur it out so they dont give away free advertising? I always thought they had to pay to air their product.

No, no money has to exchange hands for you to show a product. Apple may go to a studio and say "Here's a few million dollars if you use our products in the film." If no such advertising purchase takes place, they can still use Apple products in the movie with the logo clearly visible, however, most studios won't so they don't give Apple free advertising.

The reason Transformers is like a 2 hour long commercial for the new Camaro is because GM paid heavily for that, if they didn't buy that advertising, it probably would've just been a generic CGI car without any logos on it.

The only time the film makers have to pay to use someone else's product is in the case of music, clips from other films, or other creative work, where royalties must be paid. But not to show logos.

Yeah it kind of gets annoying with the in movie/TV show advertising. Transformers was a good example. Last seasons Eureka got kind of annoying with all the product placement, but if it helps keep the show going I guess it's just the prise we have to pay.

Yeah...Also if you watch this week's episode of Entourage it shows Drama and Turtle playing XBOX360, but when they take a close in shot of Turtle, you can see XBOX controller is just blinking with all four sides around the x lit up, which means the controller isn't connected to anything...

You know, the whole TV/Movie-upside-down-iPhone thing happens so much I almost wonder if it's on purpose.

Like the whole "let's not give Apple free advertising", are they maybe holding it upside down on purpose?

I dunno ... I'm just stabbing in the dark, but it happens so often and is such an easy thing to not get wrong (trust me, these dudes have used iPhones before), that it's a bit suspicious.

This happens with many products, not just Apple ones. Does anyone here actually think that the actors are USING the phone while filming?

Anyone who watches Mythbusters knows that Adam uses some flavor of MBP, but they cover up the logo on purpose, as is done in many ads. Believe me, these people aren't stupid enough to try and use the phone upside down unless someone told them to.
