it was my monitors fault

I have had harddrives make this noise when they are getting ready to go bad. It is usally caused by the stylus slamming back and forth across the platters. This can happen when there is an issue with sector 0.

Do a disk scan for drive health, and backup immediately if there is an issue. It is commonly called "hard drive click of death"

Back it up to be sure. Maybe take a video of turning the computer off and seeing if the noise happens again.
 
I heard a sound like this years ago.

In my case the cooling fins of my X800 GPU getting too hot and jump from the copperplate of the graphiccard.

Take a look to you GPU cooler.
 
I know exactly what noise you mean. although, my Mac Pros don't do it too often. now that we have low temperatures outside, I can hear it everytime I open the window of my office for a few minutes after the Mac Pros ran for a few hours. it's definitely something from the case. might be a joint between plastic and aluminum or other two different metals. I'd say this isn't anything to worry about.
 
My monitors will make a cracking noise as they are cooling down, don't know if I ever heard it coming from my mac pro, but it could be if it is getting hot, and cooling down. Never heard it while warming up though...

Either that, or I will find a buy one get one free coupon for an exorsist, and we can spit the cost :eek: lol
