I noticed there are a few forums springing up about the iTablet...
like http://www.itabletforums.com etc... is this thing really gonna happen? I think it'd be killer to have a multi-touch macbook air in my hands. :)

A Mac OS X Mac tablet has been rumored quite a bit this past month or so, so it's a good possibility that we will see one. Specs include a 12"~13" display and an optical drive.

Those rumors point to a September~October release.

An iPhone OS iTablet has been rumored for a longer time, but the rumors, although from a reliable source, are few and far between.

Those rumors point to an undetermined date after Macworld 2008.

I would think they're going to go full-blown OSX... only with an on-screen keyboard / optional keyboard.

What would be the point of going "iPhone OS" ? Why "dumb down" the interface..? I'm thinking OSX w/ built-in tablet features.

I've been waiting for a decent tablet PC for *years* ... it's time, apple! multi-touch in photoshop (Photoshop Multi-touch edition) .... is like the holy grail for graphic designers.

thoughts?

If Apple could produce a Tablet-Mac that acted like an Intuos Cintiq for Graphics Professionals, but had all the features of a full-blown Notebook, that'd be just dreamy. Offer in a couple sizes & enough "build your own" options to sate everyone, I'd buy one yesterday.

For a small (5"~8") tablet...
  1. Mac OS X isn't designed for a touchscreen. Neither are most apps. Since there would also be Macs without touchscreens, that means yet another development platform.
  2. Mac OS X and its apps require a set of system requirements that are likely to be too high for a reasonably sized and priced mini-tablet.
  3. Mac OS X and its apps work best with displays larger and higher-resolution that those on a mini-tablet.
  4. Apple can build up the iPhone OS for a larger-than-iPhone device by adding multitasking, iLife, iWork, etc.
For a larger (12"~13") tablet, only the first point applies (which makes it more likely).

An obvious reconciliation of the two different types of rumors would be that Apple is planning to release both a mini-tablet and a regular tablet.

windows tablet market can serve as a example, if apple were to follow up and go into this market, what kind of profit it can get? I think the problem is there is no strong and enduring demand on tablet.

Agreed. As much as I'd love to actually doodle around on a Mac tablet in Illustrator, I just can't see the demand being that high. If anything, it might sell big(ish) for the first while from people like me, and maybe some graphic studios, but, from there, where would it go? Anyway, that's just my opinion.
