iTMS-->parents account to mine

i sent this as a email to the ITMS Support about a week ago...all i've received back is the automated bliss.."we'll get back to you" etc etc. & i called them...the guy & his supervisor didn't think this was possible at all...


"MAIN QUESTION: Is there a way to transfer the songs that I bought through my parents account to my own account?

I have recently turned 18 and now have my own credit/debit cards. In the last year, i have purchased approximately 180 songs from the iTunes Music Store using my parent's account and credit card (through the allowance & gift card process). However, I am going off to college and i would like to have my own Apple/itunes account.

I understand how the authorize/deauthorize process works: Once i deauthorize my parent's account on my computer and reauthorize it with my own account, all the music that I bought through my parents account would be unable to play. I do not wish to burn about 18 cds and reimport the files, as this would be greatly time consuming.

I understand that if this process were simple, there would be no point to the Fairplay DRM, however in the near future, I would think this will come up frequently as teenagers who use their parents accounts with gift cards and allowances would one day start using their own apple/itunes accounts."


What do you guys think? I think its a interesting topic...i don't think its been brought up before. I know all about the program Hymn, but i don't want to risk Apple making those songs not work with every new iTunes version. I know they did that shortly after Hymn came out...did they stop doing it? I couldn't find anything here on this topic...sorry if I missed it...

Anyway, I like to do this as legally as possible.
 
I always thought that one computer can be authorized to play music purchased by more than one account. As long as that iTMS account has not been authorized on more than 5 computers I don't see the problem. So you shouldn't deauthorize the music purchased under your parent's account, just start buying music under your new personal account. iTunes should permit you to play music from both accounts, since your computer would be authorized under both accounts. So while you can't reassign the music to another account, that shouldn't matter.

Since you bought the music, you should be able to do with it whatever u want. Since this is the case, just download this little app called "Hear Your Music Anywhere" which will remove the aac restrictions on your songs.

Note: I have not actually tried this out, i just did a macupdate search, so use @ ur own risk.

oh yes, i totally agree with you 100%. I guess what i'm trying to figure out is a "legal" way to do this that Apple won't circumvent in the future. I guess to do it WITHOUT having to deal with the "risk." It shouldn't be there.

But I'll try out that program, thanks. BTW, anybody know if files used with Hymn have been blocked from the 4.5->4.6 transfer? I know 4.5 blocked it after Hymn first came out. Anybody having to redo their songs changed with hymn two times?

EDIT: Outerspaceapple: Thats actually the program I'm talking about: Hymn. I didn't notice that it was an acronymn at first :) Its the program that was on sourceforge and then put on Indian servers.
 
Why not just try out playing music bought under two iTMS accounts on one computer? Maybe you have a friend that can give you a file to test, or you could risk $0.99 and try it yourself. My understanding of the way authorization works is that you will have no problem doing this, and it seems like the easiest solution to your problem.

You said that you would like to stay legal, and making any attempt to circumvent the DRM of your iTMS files does not keep with this goal.
 
hmm, i guess i would never think of that as a problem, i've had my own credit card since 15 or 16 i believe.but i have wanted to transfer music since i bought some music on an old account that ive since changed.

thats funny I've transferred about ten or so songs from my dads computer to mine via network connection, and I've never had any problems playing his music at all. We both have seperate accounts.

I guess you can just try and see if it'll work, I have no reason to think it wouldn't.

humm weird....not what i was expecting...i finally got my dad to enter his password...

For the Record: then i went ahead and changed the account to my own. I bought a couple songs too. So I assume i'll never have to enter his password again? Since i've authorized these songs i don't plan on ever buying any more music through him or entering his password into iTunes. So Elan0204 was right. :)

I just tried hymn and couldn't get it to work :( - it said that it couldn't find an iTunes key or an iPod.
