Hi everyone,
Noob here, so trying my best to search and find info. I was fortunate enough to get a 16G iTouch and iPhone from a corporate giveaway. I already have ATT cell service on my existing phone, and not sure if I really want to use the iPhone as a "phone" due to monthly service price tag.... but I do like the GPS and camera features of the iPhone vs iTouch.

So what are my options? (go easy on me, I'm new to all this!). I found some threads from 2007 that say you can't turn the 2G iPhone into iPod w/o activation. Is that still true with the 3G version??? Exactly what *CAN* I do w/ a 3G iPhone that doesn't have a cell phone plan? I would like to use the GPS when travelling on vacation, etc if possible.

Or basically, WWYD if you had a NIB iTouch and iPhone but couldn't spring for $100+ monthly phone service?

I feel blessed and cursed at the same time. :)

I don't believe this is possible even on the 2G version without unlocking. You need to activate the iPhone to get any functionality of it.

Nothing.

You can't.

Sell them both? Give them to someone else as gifts?

id keep the iPhone since its basically the touch w/ a camera and the ability to add a 3G plan if you feel like it. then i would sell the touch or give it to someone as a gift

without the phone's service the GPS would be worthless. There aren't any maps stored on the hard drive so without the internet all you would see is a dot roaming a entirely blank screen.

The only thing you can do with an unactivated 3G iPhone is dial 911. I think the Touch is a better value for you. I'd sell the iPhone or give it to someone who can uses it.

I'd sell both on ebay and take your $1,000+ and get an original iPhone. Unlock the original and use it with your current plan.

Yep, I think the Touch is the way to go. Kind of a bummer that I can't make use of the 3G iPhone. I stopped by the Apple store yesterday (people lined out the door waiting for the iPhone) and talked with the Apple rep. They weren't even sure how it was sold w/o activation and I don't know either. At any rate, he said I have to activate the phone for anything to work, so looks like I'll be keeping the Touch. Still not a bad gift to receive!!!

Thanks for all the help.... now I'll be asking questions on how to use the Touch. :)

I am confused.

I have an iPhone 2g, that i switched out the sim, but it has no service.

I use it as an 'itouch' all the time. I even can put it on itunes and get my latest apps and my music.

My other 2g is unactivated (USB cable pic to itunes).

Why does one work and the other not?

i have a 3g and when the new iphone comes out this summer i will be able to upgrade to that. i alos have tomtom on my 3g and the other day took the sim out to see what would happen. the app worked just fine with no sim chip in it. why wouldnt he be able to down load tomtom on the 3g and not activate and use it as a "touch". it still powers up and you can use it to play music and use it on wifi. like someone said earlier it is a touch with a camera.
