Pre release that is.

I was really hoping Apple would handle the 3G release the same way they did the iPads launch by allowing for reserves at Apple stores. Just got off the phone with David who is a sales specialists at Apple Inc and gave me the low down. Seemed there were a few complaints over how launch day went with the whole two line process. Whatever, seems like I have a decision to make now as to whether I go ahead and order online and wait or take a risk by showing up at my Apple Store around lunch time and see if I can snag one. Strange how Apple has just released a Press Release in regards to the release date. I wonder if they are going to keep this low key?

Oh and for anyone who wants to verify this just call Apple and ask to speak to a sales specialists and maybe mention it's iPad related.

Re: Lunch time--depending on what shift you work, this could be a bad plan. I believe they're not selling them till 5pm that day.

Did Apple do anything other than a press release leading up to the WiFi launch?

Pardon me as what I meant to convey was lunch time being the time I would get there to start waiting in line. Or at least to get some sort of status update.

I have been hoping for the same as well.....

The closest Apple store is in Des Moines about 2 1/4 hours away from where I live. I could order and wait for the May 7. But I think I will take a shot at next weeks April 30th release and wait in line. If I fail at that...I will just have to order online and wait.

As for now it looks like I'm going "camping":p

I think at 3:30-4pm umma wait to make line......

maybe i'll be like the 10th person in line or something. or even the 81st.

but 2-3 hours I'll see. Hopefully they have enough inventory

Can't you order one online, then go to an Apple store on release day/weekend, and if you are able to get one, cancel the online order?

Not with the way some people have their cards being charged X amount of days before actual shipping. Wouldn't feel like dealing with that.

This should have been obvious when they announced the release date/time. The fact that it is gonna be at 5pm suggests there is no way to properly do reservations. For the Wi-Fi model they allowed reservations that would expire after 3pm the day of release. What would they do with reserves for the 3G? Hold them until the next day?

Nah, it's simple for Apple, no reservations. After release day if they run out I am sure you could place a reservation for when they get a shipment in, but no pre-release reservations.

it comes out on the 30th right, jut want to make sure i will hopefully wait in line outside the mall and then run like hell to the apple store:D

I live in Orlando and here, we have several Apple stores in the vicinity as well as several Best Buys. From what I'm reading, Best Buy is going to be giving out vouchers when they open. Presumably, one could show up at 10AM, get their voucher, then return closer to 5pm and not have to stand in line all day. I haven't heard if the individual Apple stores will also be doing something like this or not. We're still well over a week out here, I think the best bet is to wait till next Wednesday or Thursday, then call the Apple Store/Best Buy you're planning to shop at and see how they plan to handle the 5pm release. Pick which store's plan sounds more sane (if there is a more sane option) I myself live roughly 5 minutes from a Best Buy with an Apple section, I plan to stop by the store on Thursday next week and speak with the manager as to how that store's going to handle it. If they're doing vouchers, I'll show up early and get the voucher/shop there. If not, then I'll probably just go to one of the Apple Stores in town in the morning and check the scene out. ( luckily I have Fridays off and am close to both an Apple store and a Best Buy :) Just some options/recommendations to consider...

I dont think you'll have to worry about waiting in line.

No one is gonna know about the 3G launch but us nerds. I doubt even the news stations will talk about it.

Hoping so myself! Would be great to just walk in and buy one. I am also thinking about going to the best buy in a 'less prosperous' part of town, not ghetto tho, don't wanna lose a finger ;-). I'm hoping also, maybe, just maybe if I get there when they open, I might just possibly catch an employee whose tired, hung over from the night before and unaware they aren't supposed to sell it to me till 5pm, who'll, drearly eyed, walk in the back, bring one out to me, and walk away. (I know I'm not gonna be that lucky, but hey, nothing wrong with trying!!! :-D)
