I'm not starting this thread to start up more speculation, I'm just putting this out there to see what you guys make of it.

I go to penn state, and on campus we have a large computer lab with 500+ computers in it, mostly pc's but theres about 20 mac pros and 50 imacs. Up until yesterday the imacs were the old white ones, and today I walk in to be greeted by brand new 20" 2008 models. I'm typing on one right now.

The thing about PSU is we are huge, and have a lot of influence with our purchasing power. Businesses like to be 'in bed' with us most of the time. I talked to a few older students, who when asked, do seem to remember that we updated from g4's to the whites a couple weeks before the alum's came out. Which leads me to believe that PSU might get a discount on models from apple that are on their way out, as long as they buy up a lot of the ones left in stock.

I personally don't want a new model to come out until March for personal reasons, but this may be another sign. Or it may be mere coincidence.

Good stuff. I graduated from UofM Ann Arbor last spring, though we upgraded to 20" alum imacs since fall of '07 (after they came out i think).

Actually my post isn't really related, but go Big Ten? :D

wow yeah totally agree, never thought of it like that. come to think of it, the faculty of the music school here at Ithaca College ALL got new 20'' alum iMacs if they requested it...I bought my 24'' alum iMac in July and am perfectly content with it - hoping to get manyy years out of this machine.

I bought mine in late December, and with a student discount and no tax it only cost me $1,699. I think I'll sell it for $1,600 when the new one comes out and put the extra $100 towards a new one... I consider it a 'rental fee' for having this mac for a couple months

This has nothing to do with purchasing power and everything to clear out old inventory or make a bulk sale, as evidenced by numerous reports about people getting $50 discounts when calling to buy an iMac.

Douchebaggery at its finest.
What ever happened to wanting others to be happy?

Okay... I wasnt like trying to say penn state is all knowing and powerful or anything, just that they might be getting a bit of a deal from apple, due to their ability to buy hundreds of thousands of machines for all of our campus'

Just because I want something to happen doesnt mean I don't want others to be happy, douchebaggery would be if I somehow delayed the release to march. Since when did wishing make one a douche?

Fair enough, my bad :)
I've ordered from Apple biz on several occasions and gotten better deals without asking -- not by much, mind you (2-5%).
On bigger orders I did end up getting around a 12% off with two iPod nano thrown in as well.

Man, did my asskisser/approval ratings jump through the roof when I threw one in the hands of my at-the-time boss a day after he asked what MP3 player to get his wife :D

Let's put it this way.
I want (and if it weren't for laying in sickbed atm, that would be "need") a updated iMac -- specifically quad core, or I'll have to get a Mac pro.
You don't want me to have one.

That's either jealousy expressed as douchebaggery if you can't afford it, or just general douchebaggery if you can.

Personally, I wish the big pharmaceutical companies would drastically slash the prices of their meds, I wish there was food enough to go around so starvation would be nothing but a bad memory -- and I'd prefer it to happen now rather than in two months, despite it not affecting me directly.

Now, I did take that to its extreme -- I always do because it's insanely easy to do so ;)
Like you said, you have personal reasons for not wanting it to be updated until after march.

I've no idea what those reasons are, but I fail to see how having it delayed to Q2 '09 makes you happy -- especially at the cost of those of us who want/need it now.

You said you wanted to upgrade, but really -- it'll be basically the same machine whether it's announced now or at the end of March.

Yea, new iMacs are ready, just waiting to ship. I can't see why to wait till June and according the newest news new iPhone will be released in June

http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/09/02/03/report_hints_at_next_gen_iphone_in_june.html

It'll be in late Feb. or beginning of March

Well, to make a long story short I've been waiting for the new iMac since early October... When macworld came around and no new iMac came with it, I had to buy due to business matters. So I purchased the 2.8ghz model in January. I'm now back in college with the mac, and my spring break is in March.

If everything goes as planned (which it wont) the new iMac will be released around the time of my break, I'll sell my iMac for $1,500 (I hope) with 3 years of apple care. And purchase a new one for $1,699 after student discount... Whereas if it comes out now, theres no apple store around here, and I'll be stuck with my mac, loosing value every day.

In the end my wishes don't matter. I highly doubt the apple fairy is watching this thread and manipulating the release date to my whims. In the end no one really wins, not you guys waiting, not me scheming... We all just adapt to what Apple does

Err.. is there a reason you can't buy it through the online education store?

My backwater country doesn't even have a single physical Apple store, but I can definitely use the education discount (well, if I were a student) online or over the phone.

I don't really see the problem...? :(

I guess I could, but My home is right near Deleware, which has no sales tax, saving me over $100, which is worth it to me

deliver to a delaware address if you can.

I wish. I already asked all of my family and friends if anyone had a deleware address, and the closest I came is my girlfriends friends uncle has a beachouse in DE. But they usually live out west and will not be at that address until June.

In the end I don't think I'll get the $1,500 anyway, and I refuse to spend more than $200 on the upgrade, when this is already a lot for me... I've been following pricing trends of used 2.4ghz 24" iMacs from the previous generation, and most sell for $1,200
