...when you start seeing programming like this... yeah i see the whole "freedom of speech" but i mean... if this goes to a pay for service.. i really don't want to be paying for this type of podcast... not that i have to anyway... im just wondering if apple plans on any sort of content monitoring, or is this pretty much all up for grabs?

Apple isn't required to list *every* podcast, and podcasting can continue with or without iTunes integration. I have no qualms.
If you find a questionable podcast:
- Subscribe to it for now
- Listen to it (uninformed complaints are lame)
- Click on your pretty purple Podcasts source icon
- Click on the podcast's line item (the top one with the arrow)
- Click on "Report a concern" at the bottom of the iTunes window and complain away.
Meh, personally I'm rather impressed with the podcast integration. Honestly I thought "meh" when I first heard about it but after seeing how apple set it up I'm rather impressed. I downloaded the CBC 3 podcast this morning b4 work and I'd wished I'd downloaded more!

We are heading towards uncharted waters, and the going will get rough. Apple will need to have some restraint in who they decide to podcast through iTunes - or there could be lawsuits.

I was rather dissapointed. A lot of the podcasts dont work or are "unavailable" i should say. It is seemless i should say, but if the ONE podcast you want is unavailable, i wouldn't call it a success. Sure it will get better, but i mean they should have so many more music podcasts. The truth is most of the podcasts regardless of availability are just dull. There is nothing truly spectacular. Sub Pop's music one WILL be great, but since it isnt available (GRRR) i really can't say i've enjoyed the podcast experience at all. I guess it's not my thing... Just internet radio is so much better in iTunes, why not make it like that??dornoforpyros said:

but my initial concern is still there. if you subscribe to podcasts and you don't frequently check on them you might end up with a disk full of child porn, sex ads, nazi propaganda and what not. those groups will jump on this new uncontrolled advertising medium.
apple will have to include some parental control thing otherwise they get sued their ass off.
and no, i'm not for any kind of censorship. but i also don't want to be bombarded with that kind of stuff under the cover of regular podcasts.
i think the future will be that you only subscribe to trustworthy podcasts. and high quality stuff eventually will cost you money......
Well, only if the podcast you subscribe to starts offering that content. When you subscribe to a podcast it is to that podcast alone, not every podcast. I can't subsribe to ESPN and get NPR for example. Yes, many low lifes will use this as a means of peddling their junk, but then the Internet has always been like that.andiwm2003 said:

That's like worrying that if you leave a VCR unattended to record the Disney Channel, you're going to end up with a tape full of kinky sex videos. It's simply not going to happen unless somebody jams Disney's satellite feed or breaks into the podcast's hosting Web server. There are no new risks here.andiwm2003 said:

I think the whole idea of Podcasts are stupid. I honestly don't get it. If I want to hear the sports info or games I would turn on my radio or sattilite radio for recent results. Who would actually want to possibly pay money to hear a radio show, and then have to sync it to there iPod to listen to it portably?

Let's face it, media is corporate run and they give us what they want to whether we like it or not. Podcasting has the potential to bring on a multitude of alternate views, not a bad thing IMO. With podcasts (for free) from CBC and many others, I can browse the menus for shows that look good, (or subscribe), and listen to them at night when I am catching up on emails, paperwork and MR posting. Or on my iPod.
Podcasts aren't going to be a pay service. While it is possible that it could suddenly change course and turn pay-per-listen, the odds of a once-free service transforming itself into a huge pay service are minimal. Things that are initially free rarely ever change like that. However, pay services sometimes do the flip and become free. For instance, small satellite radio providers are already offering the technology to send their signal for no fee, provided the auto is outfitted with a satellite receiver.
The internet is certainly "The Wild West" and there will likely be disclaimers put on those adult podcasts. Or rather, Apple will just strike down adult material alltogether, but that is going to require careful monitoring of the content that is posted.
I, for one, love the idea of podcasting because traditional radio is not convenient for me. There are no cars that I drive on campus and I am not about to pay for satellite radio when it is quickly becoming outdated; podcasting allows me to search and find the radio programs that I specifically want and sync them, for free, to my existing iPod. The further convenience of iTunes' integration of podcasting makes the process quite easier; iPodder never appealed to me and I'm not keen on small, third-party software.
