hi all,

couldn't find an ipad mini sleeve that i like so i decided to embark on a new journey of making my own sleeve. i bought 100% wool felt (1/8' thick) some leather (below pic) and i will see how it goes. i will update you guys on my progress. hopefully it's not as challenging as i thought it is.

thanks.

PS: anyone here who have done this ? would love to get any inputs, advise.

UPDATES on my Ipad Mini Sleeves:

Step 1: make a pattern. i just used standard copy paper and taped them to make one big paper.

Step 2: use a very sharp exacto knife to cut the patterns. using sharp knife will give you a clean cut. especially when cutting leather. i wanted to use black leather for contrast but decided to use my light green leather instead to make mine one of a kind.

Materials:
1) 100% Wool Felt (1/8" Thick Medium F-7 100% Wool)
2) Light Green Genuine Cowhide leather (lightweight)

TIME TO SEW..... thanks.

I'll be following your thread and look forward to seeing how you do with your sleeve. I used to have a felt sleeve from P.A.P. for my iPad 2 and was looking for a similar sleeve for my iPad mini, but the one P.A.P. have for iPad mini is not the way I like it =/

This is the one I had for my iPad 2:

thanks a nice sleeve. simple but elegant. i sure will keep you posted on my progress.

Here's an update:

i am using a husqvarna 425 freesia sewing machine with leather needle (a must if you're sewing leather) and an upholstery thread.

Cool!

Very cool! I have access to heavy duty sewing machines and supplies. I've been looking for a place in Los Angeles for the felt...no luck yet. I may have to order online.

Keep updating!

darn. that's awesome to have access to heavy duty sewing machines. i can't find 100% wool felt locally so i ordered online. just get the 1/8" thick as it's really thick enough. it's fun doing it yourself. possibilities are endless. but make sure that you got all your design and templates mad up as once you cut and sew there is no turning back. i made a mistake on the cover lock so i am having a hard time improvising. originally i wanted to have a belt like cover but now i keep on going back and forth. i need to go to joanne's for some supplies and options. will keep you posted.

Updates: Finally it's done. maybe not the best stitches as i am using a regular home sewing machine. would be nice if i can get ahold of a commercial sewing machine. maybe not the best design out there but for total cost of $12 (+/-), i am a happy camper. i will now try to make an iphone 5S case/sleeve and will make another ipad mini sleeve. i could say that this one is kinda like On The Job Training. it's quite a challenge i may say as i got too ambitious and had some plan changes when i already have done the sewing. next time i will know better (patterns, patterns and patterns are the key). leather is so hard to sew using your home sewing machine. make sure that you use a leather needle. and the wool gets so thick that sometimes my sewing machine will just stop.

By the way this is 100% Wool Felt 1/8' thick medium F-7 and genuine cowhide leather in light green.

nice!

question, did you put a SF sticker on your smart cover or does some place sell it with different sports logos?

thanks

thanks. i just cut out the SF logo. can't find anywhere and the cover with sports team logo is so expensive so i decided to make my own. i cut it out of a lexan label i have.

Impressive, creative and very attractively made. Very well done, and long may you enjoy the utterly original pieces that you have designed and crafted.

thank you so much for the nice words appreciate it.
