My new system as shown in my updated sig below. No yellow, no smudges, no smears. I used Setup Assistant to move all my files, app's, pref's, iCal, desktop, etc., etc.
Worked like a charm - I haven't been able to find a flaw yet, and I've been trying.

Can you hear the fans in a room with no noise? Just curious because I can if I'm at the iMac and there is no noise in the house. There is also a faint high pitch noise under the same conditions.

What system did you have previous to this one?

Nope. Nothing. Just as quiet as my previous iMac, but much more powerful.

What system did you have previous to this one?

AlphaDogg: I had a 2007 model iMac, 24" 2.8 C2D, 4GB ram (667) and a honkin (;)) DH2600 pro with a 750GB HDD.

Congrats, but do yourself a favour. Stay away from the iMac forums before others here convince you your machine must have faults. I found myself actually putting my ear up to the screen a couple of weeks ago listening for any sounds, and got all paranoid when an after-image on my own retinas made me momentarily think I had yellow tinge. At which point I realised these threads would drive you nuts if you read too many of them :D

HAHAHA that's good advice!

I've had my i5 for over 6 weeks now and have no yellow tint, no noisy hard drive, no issues at all. It is perfect and as I'm getting used to the OS I'm loving it more and more every day.
:D:D

Yes , there are some who are not as fortunate as us but no one will convince me there is something wrong with my iMac. I did some initial (quite extensive) tests when I received it and that was enough. No need for further tests.

Very good advice there, Queso but I already knew that. This is my second Mac, not my first ;).
But, what I did learn this time was just how good the whole "system" - meaning the same manufacturer for the hardware and software, is. My old iMac had a 750GB HD, so I bought an Iomega 750GB, firewire 800 desktop HDD and a copy of SuperDuper! which I used to back up to every week. (didn't like TM for reasons I won't go into here). When I got my new iMac hooked up and ready to turn on for the first time, I used Setup Assistant to copy or clone from that backup to my new Mac. Can you guess how that worked out? Yep, even better than I expected. With the FW800 connection the whole operation took less than 40 minutes from unboxing to finished. Amazing to an old PC hack like me.
It even gets the same desktop picture for you. Everything was just as it was on the old system. Safari bookmarks, Mail mailboxes and all my old (and valuable) e-mails. Dock settings, preference settings, EVERYTHING! Here's an example of how smart the program is: I was running iTunes 9 and had a lot of downloaded songs. Not only were all my playlists, etc. there but they were there under iTunes 10! I'm impressed. Never again will I buy a MS PC.

Congrats I recieved my refurb i5 this week and let me tell you I was as happy as you nothing wrong. There was a speck of dust under the screen but that doesnt bother me ONE BIT. enjoy and I will not search for any problems on this beautiful machine.

This reminded me of the phrase from the Seinfeld Show...

"They're real and they're Spectacular!"

If you are not a fan it will mean nothing to you....

Congrats, my new 27 is sitting in about 2 days away from delivery to my front door. I can't wait. I hope mine will be spot on too, fingers crossed. :)

glorious perfection!

Still setting mine up. I have an i7, 2tb with 16gb from RamJet. Ram took less than 5 mins to install, with no hitches. Was originally going to go with the 8 or 12gb, but the prices dipped a little. Machine is whisper quiet. I have a WD 4tb hanging off the firewire port, and a few older f400's daisy'd off the back. Going to buy another WD 4tb for Time Machine, which will be my third one. Price is right at around $380 from Amazon, and the drives are dead silent, unlike my Maxtors which always sounded like a drunk chipmunk trying to get on the hamster wheel to start the platters. Just ran the calibration on it with no hitches. Upgrading the Aperture library to v3 now, which looks like a day long affair at least.

Had one issue, 6 hours before the iMac arrived I had one of my external drives go down. The Maxtor was flashing blue lights and could not be accessed. I had purchased an Newer Tech USB Universal Drive adaptor from OWC for emergencies (like this one, lol). THE BEST $29 I have ever spent. period. I pulled the drive from the old enclosure and hooked it up to the adaptor kit, within seconds the drive was mounted, and I spent last night rescuing about 200gb of material. I have 2 other Maxtor drives of about the same age, so I am taking that as a sign to replace them as well. If you ever have a drive go down on you, this thing works great. It seems a lot of drives fail because of failures in the enclosure or the power supply. This is the second time it saved my butt...

Going to use the Migration assistant to transfer my old apps after Aperture is done upgrading the library. So far so good, biggest gripe is the time it is taking to copy & move files, but that is just because there are so many. The Aperture library is almost 400gb alone, and I think I am going to break it down into smaller libraries. The size makes me nervous. Hard to believe my first gen white 24" iMac could handle it as well as it did, but anxious to see how it flies on this thing...

I bought both the pad and the magic mouse, and so far am using them equally. The pad is a little easier for the huge screen than the mouse in some ways, but the mouse is easier in other situations. I bought the Apple batteries even though I have a bunch of Eneloops as well. For all the griping about cost, they are pretty much in line with the Eneloops (which I love).

The glossy screen is really not a bother either. Just like a glossy TV screen the glare/reflections disappear when the display is on. The screen is crisp and gorgeous. Will try to take a side-by side pic when I move it to it's permanent location.
cheers,
michael

Awesome! Congrats on your new purchase!
