I stopped by the store on the way home and got my :apple:TV. I was so excited that I left the store and totally forgot about cables. But as luck would have it I still had a few HDMI cables left from HD receivers connected to HDTVs in the house that dont have HDMI. The optical audio cable I had to rob from the cd changer but thats no biggie. I can pick one up later.

After a software update and a few bumps getting it set up for streaming I am good to go. I am thinking of syncing some tv shows and than streaming the rest. We shall see. For now I am simply streaming some music to test it out and tinker around with it.

Overall, it does exactly what I expected it to and am happy with the purchase. I even got my harmony remote working. GO ME!!!! :D

Of course there are things I wish it could do, but I didnt buy it for things I wish it could do, I got it for what it does. No plans to hack it right now unless something I find I truly need. The bummer part was I have not finished moving my library from the 250gb to the 500gb drive but that should be done soon. Next step is to get the AEBS and hook the hdd up to that.

From PC lover to Apple Fan boy in 3 weeks. Not bad conversion time I think.

Congratulations on your purchase. I love my :apple:TV too -- it doesn't do everything, but what it does do it does really well. I have way more content than I can store on the HD, so I stream a lot of it (over my g network), and that works flawlessly. So well in fact that it's barely worth sync-ing the content. There's a very brief buffering lag (~1-2 sec), but other than that there's no difference for me.

You might not get such good performance here if you're planning on storing your iTunes library on the 'Airdisk' and streaming your content. From what others have reported, it sounds like the wireless network may not be able to handle this much traffic. Check out this thread. You may want to consider connecting your external HD to your sync-ed computer, so the connection between the HD and source computer doesn't rely on the wireless network. That's what I do and it works fine. You can still share the HD to other computers (for non-iTunes activity) too.
 
first off, nice you love your :apple:tv. second, may i suggest using a better thread title next time you post?

"its here!!" is cool considering your excitement and all, but it would surely be great if you use a better title. my 0,02$ at least.

yeah my thread titles never are good. I think its a gene thing. lol

But I did have a thread only a few down saying I was getting one soon. I was hoping people would put 2 and 2 together. lol yeah thats it. lol

I totally agree. It was great over g but with my new Airport Extreme Gigabit and Draft N I don't sync anything anymore. I kinda wish Apple offered a smaller version without a Hard Drive.

edit: Well maybe the hard drive can be put to use with EyeTV someday for DVR functionality. Isn't there a rumor floating around that Apple is partnering with someone to provide an external USB tuner?
 
it was streaming decent from my Linksys G last night. There was one or 2 hick-ups while watching 300 but it didnt continue. It will get a full workout as I am encoding season 1 of the West Wing right now at home and when I get there I will be watching away until I leave for the Casino.

This is not my experience. We have a 400 gig USB drive connected to our AEBSn and it streams wirelessly to our ATV without dropping frames. They are about 60 ft apart.
 
not sure what harmony model it is off the top of my head. I know its one of the lower models. Maybe a 650 or 680?? There is no RF and it isnt touchscreen.

I figure I am going to buy an AEBS anyways so I could try it and if not good than hook a different drive up to it for other needs.

In wireless I have found that no 2 set-ups are ever the same and its almost one of those, you never know until you try it for yourself.
 
For cables, try monoprice.com. I purchased their premium ones and even then it is about a quarter of the price of Apple store charges and even less if you compare to Monster cables at Fry's and such. The only drawback is the color; it is not white, but that is no biggie.
 
Cables, nothing better than bluejeanscables.com according to many, many audiophiles with bigtime equipment. Check them out, great prices on stuff too.
 
I went through recently and changed all of the crap cables in my system to Acoustic Research. It proved quite expensive because of the DVD-Audio and SACD players in my system. They actually are all blue in color. The only thing that isnt blue is the HDMI cables that I have. We got 3 HD direcTV boxes in the house however my TV is the only one that has an HDMI port so I saved the other 3 cables for later use. I havent found any problems with them yet and it was a good thing I had them. Im sure I will upgrade to AR cables at some point as well. Ill keep your recomendations for if I ever upgrade my system to have a need for better cables.

If you are using digital optical audio, there is no point in buying expensive cables. It is digital, so it either works fine, or you get skipping, stuttering, no signal etc. It won't be this "music sounds better with these cables" kind of stuff with that you could get into with the analog connections.
 
it worked out that I had alread owned AR cables for my optical digital and 1 analog digital cable. I liked them so much which is why I decided to do the rest of the system with them.
