I know some people that went to the event and after they got back they shed some light on the device for me.
This might be useful information for some people, it sure was enough to burst my bubble.

- The device is not stand-alone!!

- The speakers are no good. They tested some songs to see how it handles different sounds, including Benny Goodman, Ponta Murakami, and The Doors. They compared it to listening to a cassette.

- Finger-proof my @$$ sums up their comments on that topic.

- Not a major issue, but storage is not upgradable.

Not a stand-alone product is a no-no. There is no real reason for this device, but I'm sure gadget freaks will love it.

It's like an iPod or an iPhone. You use your computer to enable certain features. Nothing wrong with that. I have a crap speaker on my iPod and I never use it anyways. Storage is always upgradable. There are always ways. Trust me.

it is creating/filling a niche market at this time. for me it is epic due to the sales presentation capabilities via iWork. for you, who may just sit at a desk or at Starbucks all day, it has little value. stick with your macbook. more iPads for me!

Come to think of it, I'm now pissed that my $2,000 iMac is NOT a stand alone product. Damn thing won't work unless it's plugged into a wall! The speakers suck so I have to buy external speakers and to top this all off.... I have to buy flippin software to do what I want AND use a keyboard and mouse to input anything into it.

Who thought it would be a great speaker? It's on a device that is 0.5" thick. The speaker will be passable but it's not going to be giving you big home theater sound, and anyone who expects otherwise deserves to be disappointed.

It's not a full fledged computer, it's just a really big iPod.
I would love to see a touch based OS with the power of snow leopard, but it looks like Apple is going in a different direction.

This is really just a iPod touch for people with big hands.

In all honesty a full fledged OS just has too much going on for a touchscreen. It needs the finesse of a mouse and full keyboard. I think Apple is going in the right direction but is not quite there yet. This OS needs to differentiate itself a bit more from the iPhone. Maybe in a couple revisions we may see an actual revolutionary product.

An iMac does not require another product. Your comparison to a power outlet is perhaps one of the stupidest things I have witnessed. That isn't some scripted scene in a movie, or TV show. That is your actual logic, oh my god! I hope you are still in middle school. It was that bad, it made me sign up just to comment on it.

Speakers? The iMac's inbuilt speakers are fine for listening to music when at the computer, but I can just imagine what the iPad's are like. Only useful to make beeps and dings.

I think the OP was trying to say that the speakers aren't useful for anything other than OS prompts ect. I expected as much, but considering it's highlighting media functions, it would be good if the speakers could reproduce sound which is listenable while playing music/movies.

Although if it doesn't multi-task, listening to music on it is a rather useless concept. haha

Well then who knows, maybe another company will take up the reins and will actually create something like that, and actually has aesthetics like Apple products. Im just tired of stripped down operating systems. You're right, a product like this deserves a completely new full fledged OS. The problem is that something like that may have not met Apples hardware/price goals for this device and thats why it turned out the way it did. Im sure a much fancier one can be made, but for how much? If it was everyone would be shouting "Oh theres the Apple Premium again".
