WTF? If I want a clean install of a new phone, which Apple of course wants me to keep doing (buying) every year, I can't do it unless I'm willing to lose all of my Messages history. This couldn't take a giant technological feat to accomplish. How is this still not possible?

Yea I knew about that - that would sync messages between devices right (delete a message from one, it deletes from the others, etc)? But would it allow you to log onto a brand new phone and have all messages populate? If so I wasn't aware that would be (soon will be) possible.

That seems to be one of the main parts of it.

OK. If that's true then I have some hope. But in reality this should have been possible 5 years ago. But I have hope now - I thought this was not even in the plans.

Maybe I'm missing something, but all the messages on my 6S Plus transferred to my 8 Plus when I set it up using an iCloud backup.

This would be without a backup, simply from logging in into iCloud.

Yeah I realized that after I posted. The iCloud messages was pretty buggy in the beta, but that is actually how I got all my messages on my 6S Plus after setting up the device as new with the beta.

Yup. When you restore from backup you bring over all sorts of extraneous data from your old phone(s). Generally it seems to work out ok that way but it isn't ideal. And after 3, 4, 5 years of phones and apps / data, etc, it seems like it might be a good idea to start over. And you can't unless you're ok with losing all your messages.
