I love this phone, and it really is the most revolutonary device in a while. But those random (and they happen alot) crashes really put the iPhone at a disadvantage. I know apple is going to update it soon enough and it will ap be fixed. But safari and the ipod app crash alot, usually at the same webpages. So just wanted to vent a bit, but i do love the iPhone.

i agree complete. but the damn thing works so well most of the time that, for now, i can look past the occasional crash in safari and ipod. at least the whole device doesnt lock up. that would be unforgivable. i really hope the first software update solves most of the crashing issues.
It's like when friends scoffed at the amount of maintenance my Mercedes required. Nevermind the fact that maintenance was all included (as were oil changes) but I would push back and say, "Sure the power sunshade goes wonky sometimes, and the speed-sensitive volume doesn't always work as intended, or the rain sensing wipers aren't fast enough, or the brake assist boosts the brake power too hard... but do any of these systems exist in the cars you say have little to no maintenance? No? Then it's a moot point."
This technology is a whole new ballgame, and like any other it's going to have its kinks. If you decide to be a first mover you have to accept the inevitability of these kinks and your status as a guinea pig in the effort to make this technology accepted by the mainstream.
If what you want is technology that is tried, tested, has most if not all the kinks worked out, go buy a cathode ray tube television... They've been around for decades and they're at the absolute height of their R&D curve, and many times better than all the flatscreen displays in the world.
But that's what it takes... PC's have been around for better than 30 years and most manufacturers still have problems making a "flawless" PC when they're only introducing minor upgrades as opposed to shooting for the moon.
The iPhone is the first paradigm shift in user interface design in the last 20-25 years... I'm frankly impressed there weren't more kinks upon deployment than there have been.
resetting it didn't help? Mine crashed as well, but it hasn't happened since I did the reset thing people have been suggesting on here.. I've been trying to duplicate it and haven't been able to since performing this..
I would leave it alone then and quit trying to duplicate it....Mine did this as well with ipod and I did a hard reset and seems to be working...I dont surf with the ipod playing anyway so no reason to see if it does it again....Otherwise mine has been working great

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the interface. That is wha surprises me the most.
And, as a current TV salesman, I agree that CRTs still offer one of the best pictures you can get today. Plasmas give them a run fortheir money though.

I reset my iPhone last night and I'll see how it goes today. I know we early adopters are still part of the testing phase. Another thing to do to help get Apple working on bugs is to let iTunes upload any crash logs if it asks. Those are immensely useful for tracking things down, in my own development experience.
I have to chime in here. I've got about 30 hours logged on my iPhone since last Friday. The only hang-up I've had is when I tried to save my V-mail greeting Friday nite. I'm fairly certain it was the network that wash jammed up.
Admittedly, I have very low hours logged in iPod. Most of what I've done has been, Safari, email and phone modes.
I've yet to crash the browser.

I'm surprised at how many people have been having issues with it crashing. I've had mine for 6 days and I can't put the thing down! safari has only crashed once on me, and that's about it. It works flawless.
Listening to music while surfing the web is sooo nice! Call comes in, squeeze the mic button talk for a few minutes, end call, right back to the music and internet!

its mainly forums where it crashes and i can recreate them, so its something in safari that crashes when trying to render an object or something. I just hope they fix it soon with a software update
I haven't had any iPod crashes yet, but every once in a while, Safari will crash on me, and it always seems to happen when I have low service.
Have had to do a reset just once, and had couple of crashes when cabled to my USB hub (powered) - but I will say the iPhone handles crashes better than my old Treo 650...
Same with owning a Land Rover or an old Jaguar. They're not meant for people who want maintenance free gizmos.
The difference is, the iPhone is marketed as the device for everyone. Therefore it should not require reading geek forums to find out how to get around bugs!
Yes, I suppose it must seem so to those who've not used touch specific applications, which have been around for a very long time in specialized areas.
For work, we develop on ruggedized handhelds with easy touch interfaces, including flick-scrolling, 3G, WiFi, GPS, etc.
want a repeatable crash situation? visit my website. it uses wordpress but i guess the theme i am using is at fault. try it. it locks up safari and you have to do a force quit. no buttons respond.

I suppose the bugs come with the territory - it's a tradeoff: You experience the iPhone before the rest of us, and get to help Apple work out the last few bugs!!

and i have no problems doing that! it's really a great device!
If you just hold down the home button and the wake sleep button together for a hard reset it fixes the problem for quite a while.
visiting my website will crash the safari app every time though. since i reset, i havent had safari quit by itself.
I don't own one, but I did spend about 10 minutes with one belonging to a co-worker.
Safari did crash on me - I got a bit scared that I had messed up the phone but figured out to reset it.
Overall, I really like the way it feels - very solid and intuitive.
Those random crashes are acceptable and expected out of a new device like this.

I hammer Apple as hard as anyone on their crappy quality of late, and I too have had crashed on the iPhone.
But, I am not upset since I am sure they are hard at work at an update and I just love this device. I contradiction, I gladly admit, but the pain isn't bad enough for me to upset.

You know me sooo well, Chip!!! LOL!!!!!! All of my friends have said the same thing! I announce (either in email, in person or on the phone) that I've bought an iPhone and the reaction is, "well, of COURSE you did!!!" LOL!!! They all know how insanely addicted I have become to Anything Apple. One friend said that she'd thought about emailing me on Friday night to ask questions about the iPhone because she just knew that I'd have gone right out to get one. LOL!!! Like you, I usually am not an early adopter of first-generation products, and like you, I am very pleased with my new iPhone and have no regrets! Actually, I've learned a lot with it, as this was my first exposure to synching my Address Book/Contacts, etc., among my computers. Cool beans!
I am now really kind of hoping that Nikon holds off for a month or two before making some big announcement about their latest camera or lenses -- my bank account needs a break!

When I walked in to work on Sunday - none of my co-workers were surprised. I only surprised myself. On Saturday morn (the 30th) I really went to look at the iPhone top be sure the Mogul from Sprint was my best option.
I will be at the Tysons Store tomorrow for the two sessions on the iPhone. Can't wait. Really wanting to see what I may be missing....
