iPod iTune 8.0.1 Update problem on MAC

I'm using Macbook Pro. Ver 10.5.5 and I currently have iTune 7 installed.

I want to update to iTune 8 so I open iTune and iTune/Check for Updates...it tells me iTune 8 is available press ok to update..so I press update and I update iTune 8 with bunch of other MAC os x updates...then I restart my computer...open iTune and check to see what version it is..it still says iTune 7.0....I even download iTune 8.0 for mac from Apple site and installed it and restart but it still says iTune 7 ...why is that? How can I update iTune 8?

Please help.
