are there any hacks that would allow a small itunes display to be shown in the finder bar thingy at the top of the screen (sorry i'm new to the whole mac scene and don't know the technical terms for everything)? for example, if you were playing a song than a little play thing would show up there and if you wanted to stop or change the song you could click it and it would give you a bunch of options. this would help so as to save time as opposed to control clicking the itunes icon in the dock.

You don't have to control click the icon in the dock to get that menu. All you have to do is click and hold. As for a hack, there are none that I am aware of, but I could be wrong. Could someone else shed some light onto this subject?

I don't know of any but if you can hide the iTunes window and then option click on the iTunes icon in the dock. This will show you the song playing, you can also change songs, and whatnot.

I think there might be a menubar controller for iTunes, search versiontracker.com for it. But:

an easier solution is to open itunes, click the green button in the upper-left corner. This will shrink iTunes down to a bar. Then drag the resize corner (lower right) all the way left, and your controller will be a small floating window with basic buttons. The green button now toggles between this and the big window. You can stick this over along one side, or down by the dock... it will go behind other programs but then you can just reach down and click it... make sure whatever window you're using doesn't cover it up... i've used this quite a bit, it's easier for me than a menubar icon would be, or control-clicking the icon...
