Did updating to iOS 9 result in losing connection/sync capability with iTunes 11?

  • Yes, iTunes now says I need a newer version.

  • No, it still connects, and syncs fine for me. I'm lucky, I guess.

Many, but not all, iTunes 11.4 users are reporting that after updating to iOS 9, their devices will no longer connect to iTunes 11, and demand iTunes 12.

However, there are some who say that they have no problems, and the dialog box warning never comes up.

Clearly, under some circumstances, the iOS 9 and iTunes 11.4 combo does work.

This is an attempt to try to discern what those are.

There is a poll attached, and you're free to share your experiences as well, particularly if you've had success.

However, please be sure to note:

-OS X version (10.6.8), iTunes version (11.4 build 18), machine hardware (MB, iMac, etc.)

-Type of device. List each separately if you have more than one. Some say one will work, while another won't.

-How did you perform the iOS 9 update? Through iTunes, or OTA?

-Can you actually sync using 11.4? Via USB, and/or Wi-Fi?

There is definitely something at work here, so for the sake of those who won't, or can't update to iTunes 12 and/or 10.7+, let's see if we can determine what is occurring.

No access to music. Apple Music screen appears from music app but is frozen there. Was running iTunes version before Apple Music update. Saw no reason to update. Maybe that's the issue. Apple Store tomorrow I guess. This 6+ is a hunk anyway. Screen is unresponsive and videos freeze all the time.

Alas, there may be a loophole after all, however small.

This user updated two devices (iPhone 6), one though iTunes, and the latter OTA. The former no longer connected, the latter, however, did.

They then rolled back the first device to 8.4.1, then did an OTA update, and it connected to 11.4!

Another user corroborated, so doing an OTA may be the key to retaining 11.4 compatibility, at least for now.

I'm finding more people chiming in that doing an OTA update instead of thru iTunes is the trick.

Gotta act quickly, though, if you've already updated, and need to roll back to 8.x.

I was having the same problem with my iPhone 5S, but all seems to be solved now. When I originally downloaded iOS9 I did it via iTunes.

I restored my phone to iOS8 http://www.macworld.co.uk/how-to/iosapps/how-downgrade-from-ios-9-to-8-7-reinsta ll-ios-8-3522302/ and downloaded iOS9 via OTA. No problems now connecting to iTunes.

I hadn't updated my iPad 2 yet, after having the problem with the iPhone. So once all was well with the iPhone update, I went ahead and updated the iPad without any problems. There again, downloading the update via OTA.

Yes, worked for me too.

iPhone 6, back to iOS 8.4.1 and ota update.

Sync with 10.6.8 works perfectly.

Thank god I don't have to buy a new laptop.

Excellent. Thanks all for sharing.

Good news, but there's always going to be the risk it will become an issue again with each successive update.

This stay is only temporary.

Worked for me as well...think it's safe to backup on Mac or iCloud only?

I have auto iCloud backups, but also manually backup with iTunes. With the latter, you also have the option to "Archive" a backup, and preserve it for whatever reason.

So, anyone brave enough to update to 9.0.1 yet? Does it close the iTunes 11 loophole?

For anyone wondering, I just updated my iPhone directly to 9.0.1 via OTA, and it's fine with iTunes 11.4.

My iPad went took the 9.0 step along the way, and is also fine following another OTA update.

Updating Over-the-air worked for my work iPhone too. Now updated from 9.0.1 to 9.0.2. Lots of space, few apps, not synching my calender nor contacts, but my iTunes 11.4 finds the phone and synchs. Edit: Oops, I was unclear, I am _by my choice_ not synching calendar and contacts on my work phone. Dont want to mix personal stuff with work stuff.
Sadly Apple has stopped signing 8.4.1 so I dare not update my private iPhone. Why, why does Apple even stop signing iOs versions?

Any news on the above based on the iOS9.1 upgrade - that is iOS9.1 OTA then being able to sync with iTunes 11.4 on Mac 10.6OX - many thanks.

I just updated my Work iPhone to 9.1 (an iPhone 5, my test subject and currently the only iThing I dare update).
Over-the-air, of course. And it worked, after the update iTunes 11.4 (under MacOS 10.6.8) finds it and backups, synchs apps (I added an app just to test the functionality). I can also pull pictures from the iPhone using Apples image capture. Will get back here if I find any big problems later.
I repeat, I do not sync e-mail, contacts or calendar. (This is done over the air with a server at work).

Edit: Unnessary PS deleted.

Update for you - I've upgraded my iPhone 5s to iOS9.1 OTA and have been able to sync with iTunes 11.4 on a Mac running OX10.6.8 - simple sync but tested with iCal entry and it works. Now this is the odd part. Separate user - same Mac, same OX. My wife has an iPhone 6 since she upgraded to iOS9.0.1 via iTunes and again iOS9.0.2 via iTunes she has had the warning - iPhone not recognised - upgrade iTunes etc. Yesterday she upgraded to iOS9.1 OTA successfully but iTunes still will not acknowledge her iPhone. I was hoping the OTA operating system upgrade would overwrite the phone meaning that it would be able to sync - but alas this is not the case. Any thoughts…

My guess, is that it has something to do with iTunes rather than the iPhone. I wonder what would happen if you connected you wife's 9.1 iPhone to an installation of iTunes 11.4 that has no memory of it (or at least no memory of it being upgraded past iOs 8), like on a different computer or different boot partition.
If it discovers it, then probably it is a setting in your current iTunes. If it fails and warns, then probably it a setting on the iPhone.

Thanks for the advice ChrisBe2. Do not have access to a different computer or a different boot partition (at the moment) - however I did create a brand new user on the iMac and tried to sync the iPhone 6 - but no joy - iTunes (11.4) still will not talk to the iPhone - so i guess it's something within the iPhone itself. Some setting seems to be holding on to an older upgrade via iTunes. Just to back this up, upgraded an iPad from 9.0 to 9.1 last night (every upgrade has been via OTA) and that syncs with iTunes - no problem.

Hi, no sorry our goal posts moved somewhat and had to invest in a new Mac (Mac Mini) so syncing is not an issue. If i recall once the phone has received a software updated via iTunes then you are stuck. If every software update is over the air - then it's fine and dandy - sorry to bring you bad news. Hope someone else can chip in with some good news for you.

Thanks for the input Wenlock...just updated OTA to 9.2.1 with no issues...I'm assuming 9.3 will also work...my '06 iMac is still hanging in there but I am looking forward to new Mac as well
