I know that Apple didn't release iTunes 4 today but i thought for sure they would. I thought that the new Rendezvous enabled version would be introduced since Steve said last time it would be ready in 6 months. Wonder what's taking so long.

Wait for 25th january.. nice stuff might happen then.

I would have liked it , It would have been a bit soon, but its coming so just hang on

I want it now

I know Apple just released a slew of great new products, but I don't understand what is taking so long with iTunes, their most widely used iLife program.

What is the significance of January 25th other than the release date of the iLife box? Surely if Apple were to release iTunes 4 as part of iLife, they would have said so during the keynote.

I'm also sad that my Pismo died last month, forcing me to buy a new Powerbook immediately, so I could not wait for the keynote, and therefore it seems I am going to miss out on the AlBook  I know my machine rules, but that backlit keyboard droooooooool.

I've been thinking about this quite a bit as I wanted an iPod for Xmas but thought I'd save the money until Macworld in case of a new release. However, I am convinced that there will be a significant upgrade to iTunes (most likely 4) and the iPod by January 25th and this is my reasoning.

1. It takes about three weeks to get an application from Gold Master to the shelves. If that is the case iMovie, iPhoto would have all been declared release material on the day of the Keynote for immediate download on Apple's servers. Why not let us download now.
2. There was a lot released at Macworld, however the emphasis was most firmly on the Powerbooks and if an iPod was released it would have detracted away from the Powerbooks.
3. We have already seen Rendezvous implemented in iTunes last July. That feature would contribute to a significant upgrade not a minor one (version 4 not 3.1).
4. You would not produce boxed versions of all your apps advertising version 3 knowing that around the corner there will be a version 4 soon.
5. If anyone has seen the iLife book we are allowed 16 pages as a sample (looks a good book). They have been carefully selected to ensure we see only the features identified by Steve including the smart playlists. The front cover of the pdf does not mention iTunes! It says it reveals the secrets of iPhoto, iMovie and iDVD. If there is nothing to hide, why not list iTunes. If iTunes 3 is going to be in the iLife box why hide it.
6. There are rumors of a colour iPod, and i think that this is essential to the iLife brand. This will fit right into the iLife product line up. My feeling is that a colour iPod be able to deliver items from iLife; iTunes songs, iPhoto images, iMovie movies, possibly iDVD videos, iCal calendars, address book. It then really would be the digital hub.

And I may be wrong, it's my own opinions but I think there will be a release event a couple of days before Jan 25th.

Well, Apples site clearly says that iTunes 3 will be included with iLife...he mentioned it at the keynote as well. None of the products are shipping yet and he gave demos of all of them. I don't see why, if iTunes 4 was gonna be ready by th 25th, that he didn't demo it too. Honestly, I hope your right...but I doubt it.

Here is someone who might beat Apple to Rendezvous support:

http://www.icommune.net/

It's still a little rough around the edges, but it works, and Rendezvous support is next on their list.

What I like about this thing, is that I can also host my MP3's on a centralised machine in the house (that doesn't even have to be a mac) and have my Macs (and my next door neighbour, who I share DSL with) be able able to access all that lovely Mp3 goodness from a centralised point.

Indeed they have. According to the author of iCommune, they have objected to his original description of the product when he signed the agreement for access to the API for iTunes extensions.

Despite trying various ways around the problem, Apple have (not impolitely) said that this sort of thing was not what the API was designed for. It was designed with device vendors in mind (read iPod competitors I guess).

Beneath all this, I do believe Apple has two major problems with iCommune:
1) They are about to implement similar tech in iTunes4 based on Rendezvous
2) That iCommune allows blatant copying of music that Apples implementation will probably try and avoid, and Apple wants to stay at least slightly on the right side of the RIAA.
