iTunes 7 keeps crashing in windows

Hey so I've been browsing the forums and have only found Mac fixes for the iTunes 7 crashing problem.

I dLed iTunes 7 against my better judgement so that I could start blowing cash on movies, unfortunately my iTunes keeps freezing up whenever I open the application. I have an external hard drive which is where my library is, and iTunes only crashes if the hard drive is turned on. Are there any fixes to this because, for me at least, iTunes is starting to sound a lot like Windows with new bugs featured in every update. I know that leaving the HDD off would be an obvious fix, but once again that's where all my music is so this is not a viable option.

When you say it is crashing, how so? Black screen? Blue screen of death? Locks up? Also, how much memory do you have and do you have alot of other apps running in the background? iTunes is quite the resource hog, but you are correct in assuming that it should not crash your laptop. My setup is not all that different from yours. I am on a desktop Dell, compared to your laptop, but my desktop is only a 1.7 ghz processor and I have 768MB of RAM. I have my iTunes loaded on my main disk, and my library on my external. I am also only running USB 1.1 which really bites because it is plenty slow. You say that the system doesn't crash if the external HD is turned off? Is the external HD a new addition? It sounds like maybe there is some sort of conflict going on when the system tries to access the eternal HD. Sorry I don't have an answer for you, but I think more information is needed to start drawing conclusions. Good luck.

Just re-reading what you wrote and wondering if you mean that just the iTunes app is crashing? If so, my first thought would be to uninstall it and then reinstall iTunes. You should be relatively safe since you files are already on an external drive.

How much RAM do you have and what processor (Control Panel==>System for this information)?

I won't be able to help any more but that should help others to help you.

You could always revert to iTunes 6 for now...

So I have just about the same problem as Gonzo, on my Systemax laptop. I have all my music on a folder on my Maxtor External HD. But ever since I updated to Itunes 7, no matter if the External is off or on, Itunes keeps freezing. It does not even give me enough time to minimize. The only way to close is in the Task Manager. I am running XP as well. I have, un-installed and re-installed and all the good stuff and still no luck, any Ideas?

My old Dell had something like 768MB of RAM because the stupid system for some reason would not address the RAM any higher and Dell support was useless when it came to correcting the problem. Anyway. iTunes 7 ate that system up like a midnight snack and brought it to its knees. That Dell pretty much bit the dust a couple weeks ago and since I couldn't buy a Mac at the time like I wanted to do, I bought a hold-me-over PC with duo-core 64-bit and 2GB of RAM. My iTunes7 screams now. I think the increase in RAM was the real answer. I am sooo glad I went with the 2Gig. Now I just have to get back on track to buying a Mac.

I also have all of my library on an external drive. Today I was having a problem with iTunes locking up while trying to update my iPod. I felt like a real dummy when I finally realized that my external drive was not turned on. I turned it on and my problems went away. For the other folks having issues with their external drives, maybe it is an issue with the drives spinning down after periods of in-activity. I can't say how to do it off the top of my head, but I think somewhere in the control panel settings, you can prevent the drives from spinning down. Personally, I think it is better for drives to stay spun up rather than spinning up and spinning down all the time.

KevKaos or anyone for that matter is their a work around. I have 3.50GHz, 512MB of RAM. Or any other program that will work the same as Itunes and not take up that much???

how large is ur library file? I got 13,000 songs on my external harddrive, even under OSX, when open iTunes, there is a obvious delay for 1~3 sec. I know iTunes under windows consume more system resource, how long did you wait b4 u ctl+alt+del?

I have 5797 Songs which adds up to about 24 GB

At a Minimum I have waited about a Minutes and I have waited up to a half hour and still nothing it stops responding with in seconds.

no, i was referring to the library file, somthin like library.xml ro whatever, mine is 24Mb, when iTunes started, it need to load that XML file, which suppose to be a list of your real music files.

maybe u should try to downgrade ur iTunes to 6.0x, i read some review saying iTunes 7 under windows is very resource consuming and dragging down the system.

Sorry i didnt understand, It says its 8MB well 8 and some change. I will try to find a copy of Itunes 6 do you know of a site that would have a installer for it?

Before you downgrade, move the 2 files in the My Documents - My Music - iTunes folder (.xml and .itl) elsewhere. In My Documents for example. That will return iTunes to the 'no music' state. Go into iTunes and turn off "Copy files to library" and "Keep files Organized" if they're enabled. Try re-importing the files from the ext hdd and see if it works without crashing.

If it doesn't crash then it's possible your library is corrupt. If it still crashes then for some reason your system won't play nice with iTunes so I probably wouldn't bother troubleshooting and return to V6. 512MB of RAM however is a potential limiting factor.

iTunes is a heavyweight application these days and requires a current machine to run well. ironically if we are comparing similar hardware, it can run better in Windows for certain operations - especially if you're running from shared storage.

For iTunes alternatives, try Media Monkey (I'm not a fan but many swear by it), Foobar (the nerd's choice) and j.River Media Center (one of the, if not the best, but then it's $40).
