Itunes 9 & apple TV Sync + Streaming Movies

Hi, let me start by first apologising if this is in the incorrect thread?

Just yesterday I purchased the WD Sharespace 2TB version as my 160gb ATV has only 8gb left, the idea was that I would be able to move my iTunes library to the network drive, open it from my laptop and continue to purchase and download content from the iTunes store.


So after the 4 and a bit hours of transferring all the content onto the WD Sharespace, I “option clicked” on iTunes and selected my library which was now on my network.

As expected everything worked great. All my content on the network drive and syncing with my almost full apple TV.

Except for just one thing, I was expecting to leave all my current and already synced content on the apple TV and just stream all my new stuff to the apple TV when I wanted to watch it, by leaving the laptop on and expecting to see it on my apple TV.

For some reason my ATV will not receive content from my laptop, I have the “Show only the synced Items on my apple TV” unchecked, and I have selected to share my complete library in the iTunes preferences.

But no way it wont work, am I missing something? Can I not sync and stream together? If you can pleas can somebody help me, I have searched these forums and only found this issue brought up regarding photos.

I have installed the latest version of iTunes “9.01 (9)”

Much appreciated. All my music and movies are purchased of iTunes, movies are obviously DRM

Perhaps somebody could advise a better way of doing what Im attempting to do?
 
In iTunes have you set up the AppleTV to sync with your library? Have you clicked the "Sync" on the AppleTV's page?
 
Your library can either sync or stream. Not both. You will need to set your library to stream, or buy a bigger drive for your apple tv and sync it.
 
I thought the Apple TV always streamed everything that wasn't on it when iTunes is open. The idea of syncing is having stuff on the Apple TV when iTunes is not open. Personally, I store nothing on the ATV. I'm content with streaming.

As far as your issue goes, if it's the same library I don't know what the issue could be provided you're using the same .itl file and all. If none of your media is in jeopardy, I would say just bit the bullet and resync everything to the ATV.

Thanks for the insight. It's good that you can take the time to post and still offer nothing to the OP.

With the standard Apple software out of the box, you either sync the library or stream the library. You can selectively sync a library by selecting "Custom Sync", and I have just tried streaming video which I said not to sync and it works. It looks like this is the solution you need.

Absolutely incorrect. I do just this. By default, you have to uncheck "show only synced items on Appletv", but once you do synced items and items available to stream from your library live together happily.

jocab64 was right, your first post was simply untrue. Instead of being sarcastic, why not be honest and admit you were wrong?
 
Ok so I finally have it worked out, apple TV can indeed sync and stream simultaneously.

All I needed to do was for some reason give the apple TV a restart and all of a sudden all my un synced content was there. To test I closed my itunes library and away it went, opened the library again and back it came.

I did nothing special, all the settings were that same as originally mentioned I think for some reason apple TV wanted a reboot :):)

That's not uncommon! When i tried to get the new "Wake on Demand" feature working, i did everything, but it just didn't work... Sat scratching my head for half an hour until i decided to reboot ATV (just for the hell of it, i'd tried everything else) and it all started working fine! :)

Glad it all got sorted in the end :)

I did, and I offered a solution to the OP. Custom syncing your library allows you to stream anything not sync'd.
 
It doesn't matter whether you automatically sync or custom sync though. As long as iTunes is open your media can be streamed, meaning your entire library (of checked items, I assume) is available to you. When iTunes is closed, then only your synced media (whether it was auto-synced or custom synced) is available.

In fact, it says right under Automatic Sync:

"Items not synced are available on your Apple TV when iTunes is open."
 
Sorry if this has already been established but can you selectively stream from itunes??

Meaning, I have all my kids movies on my Apple TV local hard drive (synced) for my children but i'd like to keep our regular movies and music streamable from my desktop. The only thing is I don't want ALL the movies and music to show up in the Apple TV (toooo much to navigate through). So can I sync checked items and selectively stream other items?? Maybe I'm not seeing to obvious.

This would also come in handy for high bitrate HD encodes that wont play flawlessly streamed. I could keep them synced on the local drive and stream non HD media ... I just don't want ALL my movies visible to the Apple TV.

You probably want to "Group" your movies.

In iTunes, Cmd+Select whatever movies you want to be in a group.

Bring up Get Info and under the Video tab, give these movies a common name under "Show".

Yes, "Show" is a tag for TV Shows. Trust me. Put something in there like, say "Porn" or "View Askew" or whatever.

Click & Ok, sync AppleTV.

Now you'll see a group in your movie listing named whatever you put in the "Show" tag and in that group are your movies.

I do this for movies in any series like "Star Wars", "Lord Of The RIngs", "Indiana Jones", and "Back To The Future". Just grouping those kind of movies really helps your list.

If you REALLY need to trim down a huge list, you could make groups based on the alphabet. "A", "B", "C", and so on.

Use the checkmarks next to the items in iTunes and untick anything you don't want streamed to the ATV.
