I was wondering if anybody has any experience/advice about how to sell ringtones through itunes? Is it possible? Or can one only go through third party websites.....

Yes it's possible, Apple has this business model already in place.

Personally I make all my own custom ringtones that I need for free.

haha, I'm sure they do, but is it possible for independents to sell their ringtones through itunes, much like how apps are sold?

Unfortunately no, only applications are allowed to be sold by third parties via the iTunes store, not songs or ringtones from third parties. That's Apple's domain...
