iTunes App Store charged for free application enquiry

Hi,

Today I registered an account using my Apple store account on iTunes and downloaded what I thought was a free application from the App Store on iTunes. After I did all this I went into my bank and I have noticed that £1.58 has been debited from my bank account

What confuses me is why has £1.58 been debited from my account when the application I download was supposed to be free?

File a complaint with Apple through iTunes and see what they say.

I'm pretty sure that the charge was for you registering your iTunes account and not for getting the free application. When you open a new account Apple always check that your credit card is valid and they usually charge $1 here in US (I'm guessing they charge £1.58 there) but the charge gets release after a few days, is just for verification purposes.

Hmm that is weird because I just googled and people say that registering an account with iTunes is free plus when I registered with Apple website two years ago they charged my debit card £1. So why have they charged me again?

You are not understanding.

Did you use a debit card?

Regardless, companies will run charges through to make sure a card is valid. This charge automatically drops off after a period of a few days. If it is still there next week then call your bank.

It will likely go away by itself. Depending on how your bank or credit card company displays things you don't even see these charges sometimes, but they do happen all the time on credit/debit cards.

Have Apple not e-mailed you a receipt, which should state clearly what they've charged you for?

I would certainly query it anyway, and I've not heard that they charge simply for registering (in which case they would need to state that clearly before you click on the registration).

Apple haven't emailed me a receipt. When I go into my itunes account and go to my receipt, it tells me what I purchased and that it was free. There is no charge of £1.58 on my reciept when I go into my account yet £1.58 was debited from my bank account.

As others have said, it is a temporary charge. Many companies use them to verify that the account is real and the user isn't trying anything suspicious. Check back this time next week and you should be credited the 1.58.

Apple haven't emailed me a receipt. When I go into my itunes account and go to my receipt, it tells me what I purchased and that it was free. There is no charge of £1.58 on my reciept when I go into my account yet £1.58 was debited from my bank account.

Verification is a verification and not a charge therefore it won't show up in account history. This is done with most companies when you add a new card. In about 48-72 hours funds should be back in your account.

I then went down to my bank and had a word with my bank manager. He looked at the £1.58 debited from Apple iTunes and told me that £1.58 was marked as a Point of Sale which got me worried considering that my receipt from iTunes tells me it was a free download If I don't see the £1.58 back in my bank account then I will have another appointment with my bank manager.

Also, about 14 months ago I was charged £1 for a card authorization check when I registered the same debit card on the Apple Store site so I find it strange how they should debit money again and 58p extra for a authorization check when registering the same Apple store account with iTunes

What is wrong with you? It is $1.58. Unless your time is essentially worthless you have already spent more time/energy/effort than it is worth to look into this any further. So when they do refund the $1.58 as it is exactly what it is.. $1.00 us charged that is converted to pounds. So you will have spent more time and energy on that, get the money back and still be at a net loss.

When you ask for assistance and everyone including the people who billed you tell you the same exact thing, and you know no better, it might serve you in the future to actually pay attention and listen.


Getting through life will take you a very long time if your answer to every tiny question and concern is to launch a full scale investigation of your own ignoring all advice, experience and information provided by others.

Just shoot them another email and ask. We can help, but we can't dig into the files of your account and tell you exactly what is happening. Use apple customer service, it's what they are employed for.

They are refunding you, but it's not necessary after every purchase. I would contact Apple and speak with an actual person to get to the bottom of this. As long as you are boing refunded, don't worry, but I can see where this is getting ridiculous.

I finally got a reply from itunes support. They told me that when I update my billing details that they do a card authorization check. The weird thing is that I didn't update my billing details - I only purchased two apps from the appstore.

I was wondering if the reason they put a card authorization check was that I registered my new iPod touch when I connected it to iTunes. Could this be the case?
