Earlier today, the iTunes App Store started showing the Top 200 instead of Top 100, in each category. Apple had done this earlier, but changed back to 100. Now, the categories are totally redesigned, with a few 'spotlight' apps showing mini screenshots, and emphasis on 'What's Hot' (as determined by Apple). Lower down you see all apps in the category, by release date (effectively, What's New). The top selling charts are minimized, off to the right.

What do you think?

It's disgusting. Individual category pages are now too busy. The four random previews of apps at the top is alright, but then to have a 'What's Hot' section beneath (which appears to me to be completely randomly selected) makes little sense. And why is there a 'New and Notworthy' column on the right which applies to all apps, and not just that individual category? It makes no sense at all! This will just confuse users! Should they look at 'What's Hot?', the four previews, the top paid, top free or top grossing? Way too many options in my opinion!

I'd really love to understand how these new "sections" are generated... otherwise they look pretty useless...

It looks like the emphasis is now on their selections, giving Apple the power to promote the apps they want to promote, rather than the apps that sell the most.
