Hi everyone,
I updated to Sonoma B5 from Ventura 13.5.1 on an iMac 19,1.
I still use an iPod classic 160GB with iTunes 12.9.5.5, mainly for the podcast.
I have been able to get the above configuration run smoothly in Ventura.
After the upgrade to Sonora iTunes works fine (plays songs, streaming radios links as before), but when I connect the iPod to iMac iTunes pos up the message:
iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod “iPod”. Go to the Summary tab in iPod preferences and click Restore to restore this iPod to factory settings.
In console the log message is:
System Policy: iTunes(5777) deny(1) file-write-flags /Volumes/iPod/iPod_Control/Music/*.
I tried to add iTunes to the list of applications in the Full Disk Access in System settings without success.

Is there a way to avoid to restore the iPod?

Do you have an iPod video or classic 6/7?
Fifth gens work fine. My 7th could only be recognized when it "needed" to be restored and after doing it it is not even recognized at all.

Im on sonoma as well..

Were you unable to add iTunes to the Full Disk Access list, or did adding it not solve the problem? Giving iTunes full disk access is required for it to be able to read and write devices.

If you've sucessfully given iTunes full disk access and the problem still occurs, then, before plugging the iPod in, open a terminal window and kill the AMPDeviceDiscoveryAgent process:
Code:
pkill AMPDeviceDiscoveryAgent
Now plug the iPod in and see if the problem still occurs. If killing the process corrects the problem, you might want to read this for a more convenient solution.

Unfortunately, it may be that the iPod is corrupted and you'll have to do a restore, but I would try the above steps first.

I don' know how to get the version.
Anyway, when I installed Sonoma official release, iTunes worked flawlessly with the iPod (160GB).
What you describe happened to me in Ventura when I tried to use iPod with the podcast.app.
To make it working agin with iTunes I had to rest it as new using iTunes for PC.

i restored my ipod in Windows and tried again as eugenios pointed that this could be a solution but no success… iTunes 12.9.5 refuses to show my ipod classic 160 gigs.

Which really bugs me cuz it shows and syncs with iTunes 10 and 11, downloaded and installed through Retroactive 2.0.. which *could* be satisfying if they both were not crashing randomly after maximum 5 minutes of usage…

Eugenios, on which version of Donoma are you exactly? I am on 14.2.1.

Actually on 14.2, waiting to update 14.3 as soon as I have spare time to do it.

Finder shows it when plugged in?The sequence for using the iPod with iTunes is:
Reboot with iPod connected to iMac.
login.. all the applications opens but iTunes not even if it was opened when rebooting.
Finder shows the list of disks attached iPod included.
Open iTunes which shows iHone and iPod as connected devices.
From now on, the iPod syncs with iTunes.
If there is the need to use Finder with iPhone (ie backup) I always disconnect the iPod, and before reconnecting it to the iMac I give the command killall AMPDevicesAgent.

Doing so I have been able to still use the iPod to sync podcasts which is the preferred use with this device.

Yes Finder works fine.
iTunes 10.7 and 11.4 installed with Retroactive see it without any fuss.
On the contrary, 22.9.5 and 12.6.5 don't show any sign of recognizing the iPod, except for *sometimes* "when it shows the " iPod is used bt another user" message. The `killall AMPDevicesAgent` procedure never circumvented this issue for me.

I gave full disk access to every executable I could find nested inside the iTunes.app subdirectories.
I tried to follow your procedure to the letter twice.
I restored the iPod in Windows,
I tried running iTunes as root user...
I also modified the permissions for the app to be Read & Write for every user possible on my system,
I installed CoreTypes.pkg, MobileDeviceOnDemand.pkg, MobileDeviceSU2.pkg as pointed here.
And now I just updated to Sonoma 14.3

Still the same scenario...
Not sure what's the deal exactly or what to try next.

I just found my iPod 80gb 5th generation. I'll charge it but I don't think it will sync with Music on Sonoma anymore right?
