This has been a problem for me for years now. I really hope someone has an answer for me. Also I am damn sure that almost everyone that has ever used iTunes with a device has experienced this...

When I got my first iPhone, myself and my family were all using my mothers iTunes account which was authorized on all our computers (2 or 3 macbooks). Fast forward 9 years and our family has all moved on from that to their own lives, apart from this one problem. On my phone, I still have 18 apps (according to iTunes) that I downloaded on my mothers iTunes account years ago. Every now and then, my Mac Pro which I sync to asks me for verification that the computer is authorized, just for these 18 apps (some of which I use all the time). Recently, I had my Mac Pro refurbished and is has a new serial number, so it is technically a new device, and will be recognised as a new device on my mothers account. I use my personal iTunes and Apple ID for 98% of my iPhone (iMessage, iTunes, etc) usage and this little hiccup when I try to sync my phone is an absolute nightmare.

When I try to sync my phone, I am prompted to put in my mothers password with verification, otherwise these 18 apps will be deleted. My question is this:

If i go ahead an let those apps be deleted (I have no idea specifically which ones they are which is rather stress inducing), after the sync is done, can I just re-download the apps again while on my own Apple iD/iTunes account and then ensure I have all the apps on my account for the first time? Or is that now how this works?

More than willing to explain anything in more detail. This is really stressing me out every time it happens.

There’s no solution to this. The apps were bought / downloaded using another account and belong to that person / account.

You’ll need to download the apps from your own account and if they’re paid apps then you have to pay for them from your own account.

Well yes thats what I mean, I want to download the apps from my account. My question is that if i sync it and then they are deleted, can I redownload them on my account?

Also is there any possibility the apps could be the apps that are linked to the phone? Messages, Phone, Camera etc...

Thank you for your reply so far

This is also a problem for me since I have 2 iTunes account, each for different region. iOS devices can only have one iTunes account logged in at a time, and it changes the region of the device. Worse, iOS refuse to update many apps, even if they’re free apps, until I log in with the respective iTunes account. Not only that, this makes me unable to download any of my movies since every time I switched region, iTunes locked out my device for 90 days before I can download any media.

In contrast with Android, it can update the apps regardless of the region of the original account, as long as the app is also available at the other region. This makes more sense especially for free apps.

Everything is linked to the account. So yes you should be able to download the apps via your own account.

I don’t think having multiple AppStore account falls under normal and approved usage pattern. If Android updates the apps without you having signed into an account then that’s a hole in the system I’d say.

In a global world, it should be considered. There are plenty of apps, especially related to government and finance, that are specific to a region, and I don’t have a choice other than to create different iTunes accounts for different regions. Heck, the airline Jetstar has an app, but it’s not available in the US App Store. I can understand some restriction for paid apps, makes sense. But for free apps? Those should be updateable.
