My refurb eMac 800mhz that I purchased a week ago came with Jaguar installed. I was playing around with it (since i've never used Jaguar before), and I was quite surprised with how fast the visualizer ran compared to my old imac 350mhz - about 40fps with the default size window on HQ. Later that day I formatted the HD and installed Panther off the CD's it came with. When I tried out iTunes, the visualizer was only giving me 20fps with the same size window! Even after I overclocked to 1.4ghz - almost double the speed, the visualizer still only barely hits 30fps. I know i'm being picky over something so frivolous, but i'm wondering why this is, or if anyone else has noticed this.

If any background apps running were equal, then it's possible that it was just the random visualizer that was going. This is rather shocking as Panther is suppose to be much faster than Jaguar. Any other explanations for this oddity?

I guess no one else has noticed this when upgrading to Panther, huh?

iTunes 3 or 4?

I noticed a major performance hit when going to iTunes 4 from 3. Now under iTunes 4 I cannot run a lot of other programs or I get hiccups in my sound. I need a faster computer! Are you running the same version on Panther and Jaguar? That might have something to do with it. If you don't need the music store or sharing try going back to iTunes 3 and see if that helps.

Your visualizer might be set on high detail. Once the visualizer is on, click on the "Options" button in the top right hand corner. Make sure "Faster but rougher display" is checked. When that is not checked, even on my dual 1.25 G4 the visualizer is somewhat sluggish.

Hmm, now that I think of it, i believe I was running iTunes3 under Jaguar, although I honestly don't remember for certain. Is there some way to download iTunes3 and run it, without interfering with 4?
