I've essentially got a computer that acts as a fileserver, with my other machines accessing it. Is there a way to set itunes up so that it will add any new music I add to the library folder without manually having to add it? It can be quite tiresome to add the same albums to three different computers.

no, it's not the ripping that's the problem.
i've got three boxes A,B,C.
THe Library is in box A. If I add music into A on one machine, I want the other machines to auto-synchronize with the library so that they can see it without me having to "add folder" on each machine whenever I add new music.
Is that clear, or am I not explaining this well?

THe three machines are connected through my router (2 wired, one wireless).
I'd rather not stream, because i'd like the option to add songs to the library from any machine. IE, my wife would like to be able to add to the library without having me do it.

Can you point iTunes on each machine to a networked drive? If so, set each machine to look at the library folder on machine A. This might work then, all the machines look at A for their music, then when you add music to A the xml files should be updated and the other machines, reading these xml files will reflect the changes.
I have no idea if this will work but it sounds cool. Give it a go and see if it works.
I am using an external storage connected over the network as a centralized library for iPhoto and iTunes. That way we share the same library but work on it independently. If I may just suggest that... 
Each of the machines does point to the networked drive, that is how they share the library. THe issue is not how to share the library, but how have each client synchronize itself when the library is updated on a different machine.
Even with an external drive (the same as networked drive), they synchornization does not seem to be occurring.

Does your iTunes Music folder location (Preferences > Advance) point to the external drive and shared by all the machines?
I wish I could help and that's how my sister and I share the same iTunes library over the network. Whatever I add to the library, she has it too and vice versa.

The way that I interpret your problem, is that you want your iTunes music library to auto update itself when you add, delete, or modify files or folders on your file server, so that you do not have to manually goto the iTunes library and remove the entries that don't exist any more, and add all the new files.
If you're using Windows, this might work for you. I'm at work right now, so I can't try it out, but it seems to be what you're looking for, if I'm interpreting your problem correctly.

Before buying an iPod, I used Winamp 5.x, and it had a very nice music library that would auto scan your music folder for changes, then update itself. Changing to iTunes, which doesn't do as much, and is in my opinion harder to use, has been a real stuggle for me.

I'll take a look at that program. THat is definitely my problem and my request, but the issue is that I have three computers (2 linux/XP boxes, 1 mac). And it's the mac that i want to play nice (wife's computer) the others i can deal with .
