Itunes for windows V2

Well, that was nice and speedy. Hope that wins over some of the Wintel users who are used to flawed M$ products updating slowly.

They will have to do a lot more than that to win over windows users. I use linux as my primary system, i boot into windows for games, and i have osx on my laptop. Of all these os's, itunes for osx is by far the best for audio files. But (and this is a big but) itunes for windows SUCKS. I was pretty excited, booted in to windows installed and . . . Well nothing. Crash after crash. When it finally worked properly, It was way too big in memory and ran way too many processes. And little things like having to have it show up in the task bar all the time (I put winamp in the system tray) are just to dumb. Apple (which i love) really messed up on this one. I might use it again when v18.1.1 come out. Until then, I'll use winamp v2.7.x when in windows.
I probably will. I re-read my post and relized that i sounded really closed minded. If the patch stops itunes from crashing, thats great. And if uses less ram, I'll be inpressed. But there are interface things that i don't think the patch will fix. The having to show itunes in the taskbar is one. And why do i have a ipod service running when i don't even have an ipod? That is a waste of memory. I just think that all around apple needs to re-evaluate this app. It really reminds me of a ms app the way you have so little controle over the program. As long as apple keeps this program alive, I know they will make it better and better. They really don't make too many steps backwards. I have faith. I just think the program is really rough and one patch, a week or so from the inital release isn't going to do too much.

The ipod service is running incase you hook an ipod up. Without it going, I don't think itunes would know if you were plugging it in or not. I could be wrong but it seems logical.
As for the ram, I don't get what people are complaining about. When I launch Dreamweaver, MS Access, and other normal programs they take a bunch of memory as well. I think the key to this is to not look.
As for the interface...I think the problem lies within the skin that itunes has on it. Other programs (Real for example) have the same sluggishness as itunes. Again, I think that relates to the applied skin. Other than that I'm impresses with itunes for windows on it's intial launch.

I am not in windows right now, but off the top of my head, I think itunes took about 4 times as much memory than winamp. That's a bit excessive. I know it's not nearly as much as Dreamweaver, access, etc. I accept that some programs are memory eaters. If i use one of these, i use it and then close it. I'd never let Dreamweaver sit open on my desktop for days. I have winamp start at startup and it sits there till shut down. I never have to worry about it because it is small. I tunes is jus a little to bulky.

have got v 4.1.1 for my brothers wintel machine, and am still having the same issue!
i can see his shared library (on his xp machine), but he cant see mine (on my 17" iMac)

You can hide the system tray icon, its in the preferences.
People have also asked if they can use 3rd party plug-ins and a million other questions that they could answer themselves if they read the help section.
Apple did a very good job on that help section.

No one wants to hide the system tray icons. No one in there right mind would do that. I want to hide the taskbar icon and send it to the system tray.
Wife has XP an iTunes 4.1, Ihave dual 1g g4
, but both lists show up no problemo.Have you made sure that both are set to share in iTunes prefs. Also if you use aplle built in firewall, you will need to open port 3689. Might help
Quietly contemplating a G5
The memory usage issue seems to have been worked out. Version 4.1 used about 40mb of memory, version 4.1.1 uses about 20 mb. That is compared to the roughly 15-19 mb windows media player 9 uses. At least this is the case on my system.
