When I plug it in, iTunes says "An iPhone has been previously synced with this computer" and then asks which backup to restore to. The most recent restore date was September 1. I believe I've added some contacts to the phone since then. Anyway, I was wanting to upgrade to 2.1, but I need to backup this current state but don't know how with this problem. Any suggestions?

iTunes forgot my iPhone on my MBP?

If your contacts exist in your Address Book (OS X) or Outlook (Windows) then don't worry, as they will be resynced from those sources
