Can iTunes gift cards be used to buy apps?

I guess they could from within iTuness, but can the gift card be used within the iphone app store?

Due to late delivery of my phone by Carphone Warehouse, they have given me £20 credit which i will use to get a gift card

So I redeemed a $50 iTunes gift card the other day, and the credits shows up in my account -- but when I try and buy apps, I get a warning that says "Your remaining credits are unsufficient or inapplicable to this purchase," and then the option to CANCEL or BUY.

I also have 2 free song credits (due to purchasing tickets on Ticketmaster), and when I tried to download songs I got the same warning message.

What gives? Anyone know?
