Nobody is forcing you to import photos or songs to Photo app or iTunes :)

You can still look photos from external drive with Preview or some third party applications (PhotoScape X free version is one of them) and you can add music files to your device without adding to iTunes Library (just don't check automatically add to iTunes preferences).

You can use Photo app without importing photos from external hard drive.

You can do this by navigating to Photos > Preferences from the menu bar, selecting the General tab, and unchecking the "Copy items to the Photos library" box under Importing.

It is described on link

https://www.imore.com/how-use-external-and-referenced-libraries-photos-mac

I think it is better to take some third party app, as mentioned in previous post and use it instead of built in app.

Photo is great app but it would be divine if we would have larger SSD to storage all photos :)

There are extensions for the Photo app which makes it more useful.

Description in the link says that you don't have to copy them to SSD, I just said that it would be nice to have larger SSD on Mac :). and we wouldn't have to think about storage space :)
