iTunes lags on song change using Synology Diskstation

Hi,

I have my songs stored on a Synology Diskstation which connects via AFP. The songs are not copied to iTunes so they play directly from my NAS.

Every now an then when I 'zap' through my songs a new song does not start instantly but has a lag of 3-4 seconds befor it start.

Does anyone have a similar phenomenon? What might cause this delay in starting a song?

Oh sorry for that, I mean something like playing song A for 15 seconds, meanwhile scroll down the list finding another song B and start playing it for some 20 seconds, scrolling down to song C start playing it for 20 seconds and so on. So simply just clicking around in my song collection playing only some 20 seconds of each song like if I am searching something.

So it might happen that I double click on song C for e.g. and the song won't start immediately and I have to wait for 4-5 seconds. Also the song info at the top of itunes does not switch directly.

I have a fast wifi connection of about 12-13 MB/s, so theoretically this shouldn't not be a problem.

It could be a number of things. The NAS in itself is a very small computer therefore, it might just be playing catch up or it might be buffering the data for say 4-5 seconds to prevent errors or drop outs.

I have a DS213j and use that as a media server, but mine is primarily video and not audio. And yes it takes a few seconds to load up whatever it is I have chosen to watch...

I wouldn't worry about it. Although you could chase Synology Support and see if they can suggest anything.

I hate to say it, but before I got my Mac on Christmas last year I got a old Windows 7 laptop with iTunes installed. Everything was absolutely fluent overall I can not say that switching from Windows to Mac is that easy. You have a lot of obstacles...

I have the same issue when playing from an SSD.

When a song lags, try playing another songs, and playing that song again. Songs usually only lag once. After you play them, they suddenly stop lagging. Just another bug to add to the pile.

What is wireless frequency? Are you using the proper Wireless N or AC cannels(they should be in the Hundreds channel range)?

The speed of your your wireless can produce those symptoms. Plus the speed of your switch and the version of CAT cable(CAT 6 cables at least) connecting the Synology to the switch.

One Katy thing, what Synology are you using? Plus what other services is it running?

like a said, 5 year old laptop performed well in my network. But that was iTunes 11, and not the newest one.

I use a 802.11n connection with 300 Mbps (displayed in the network details of my macbook). When I copy a large file from the NAS I get 12-13 Mb/s...so that should be enough to play a MP3 song.

Pings to my router are below 1ms.

I am using a DS112+ with just audio station.

Any ideas?

Sounds like a disk spin-down problem. I would check energy settings.
