With the 1:3 split of iTunes functionality in Catalina comes a concern of mine for one of the clunkiest things Apple forces us to do. When sharing a media library to an Apple TV, the computer with the library must have the account logged in and iTunes must be open to do the sharing. Why can’t I just attach a hard drive with the iTunes Library on it directly to my AirPort and share it across the whole network from there? But I digress. Since iTunes is now three applications, do I have to have ALL THREE APPLICATIONS OPEN ON EACH ACCOUNT WHOSE LIBRARY I WANT TO SHARE to get the same functionality I used to have? I ask because my iTunes media server computer isn’t exclusively for that. I don’t want it chugging any more than it already is. Thanks.

I don’t think any of the applications need to be open. Sharing is now a system function. I play shared movies on my AppleTV though the TV app isn’t open.
Holy cow, that’s great news. Why’ve I waited so long to update then! Thanks!

The AppleTV app does not need to be running on my MacBook Pro. Now in AppleTV (the physical black box), I open the first icon, orange computer. Used to be My Computer, now it’s labeled “Paul’s a Library”. To view all my personal movies/videos. The black AppleTV icon in AppleTV (physical black box) appears to be for rental/buying movies from Apple and for streaming the new AppleTV + streaming service.

thanks Apple, for labeling everything AppleTV or TV
