Being OCD, I've longed to have my entire collection in 256k .aac format. I've bought from iTunes, eMusic, Amazon mp3, ripped from CD's, and have used other acquisition methods since I've began digitizing my music several years ago, my iTunes library was full of various bit rates and file types, acquiring over 20,000 tracks.

Despite all the various sources that my music comes from however, I'm always proud of my pristine tagging of my library. Every song, artist, album, artwork and year is associated with my tracks.

And now thanks to iTunes Match, all my tracks are good quality copies of 256kbps .aac/.m4a files. iTunes Match was able to match 18,000 of my tracks, in which I've used the delete and re-download method to get iTunes DRM-free high quality file (yep, I downloaded 18,000 songs directly from iTunes!). The other 2,000 tracks I was able to re-rip to 256kbps .aac from CD's and FLAC and have iTunes Match upload those. The rest of the 650 tracks I've apparently purchased from the iTunes store are now DRM free (and some I thought I had lost/accidentally deleted).

Of course the size of my library, in terms of storage space, as swelled thanks from going up to 256k up from 128k (my early CD rips, unfortunately were this size and in .mp3), but it's a non-issue since I use a 4TB external drive.

Life is grand. My library is finally exactly the way I want it all the way down to the file level. If you're own the fence about purchasing it, I highly recommend it.

I enjoyed reading this. With all of the complaining going around about iTunes Match, I feel these benefits are being discarded unfairly.

I even went as far as to get my girlfriend her own Match subscription last night. She had started out using Google Music via Safari and it was working ok. But we both love Apple's ecosystem and once she saw enough of how nicely my music was set up, she caved in.

And the best part is that my entire library is with me at all times. All the music is available to me at a touch of a button over 3G/Wi-Fi. My iPod Classic will be getting less use I guess. And if I'm going to a place without 3G/Wi-fi, I can always sync my iPhone the old fashioned way. Or just pull out the iPod Classic.

How much bandwidth did that consume?

Not sure. I don't have a limit (that I'm aware of) with AT&T U-Verse. It took 3 days running at around the clock. But the deed is done and the files are high quality. I personally can hear the difference between 128k and 256k, but not between 256k and CD. So it was worth it.

Not to rain on the love here, but did you make sure your explicit tracks "if you have any" weren't converted to clean versions? I have that issue, and can't find a solution to it yet.

I agree with the OP. iTunes Match is really helpful for a music and iPod fan like me. ANd yeah the sad part is my iPod classic is seeing less use right now. I'm using my iPhone 4S more frequently because of iCloud and iTunes in the Cloud.

I generally agree that this is an incredible service. Within a a few hours all my music was available on all my devices. I just ripped a CD, and minutes later it was available to stream or download from any other device. Try this on Apple TV - beautifully done.
I do have two issues:

1. No match/update on podcasts, even "purchased" through Itunes. This means I have to manually sync with my computer any mobile device on which I want to listen to podcasts. This significantly limits the usefulness of the "auto update" features.

2. The "all or nothing" approach with using Match on mobile devices. I hoped that my Iphone's music would be supplemented not replaced. In short, I wanted to take what was already on the phone (about 1/2 of my collection for 4500 songs), leave it as is, with the option of streaming/downloading other music as needed. What I got was my Iphone's music replaced with only a few hundred songs actually downloaded. Yes, I had the option to download other stuff, but even overnight I could only get a 1/3 downloaded. And because of issue No. 1, I'll still have to manually sync with the computer. Thus, I decided not to use it for my Iphone. Just way too much trouble.

All this being said, I still think Match is great, I use it on my Ipad where I don't want a lot of music stored, Apple TV, and secondary computers. But I really, wish items 1 and 2 were solved. They maybe enough to keep me from renewing next year.

couple of quick questions...

As long as you don't download the actual matched file do you still have access the original, or was it replaced automatically??? If so, then yeah, that's a HUGE annoyance. :(

But is it possible to stream all the matched songs on your iPhone while also having all the files in their downloaded form on your desktop/laptop? Or do you have to declare either "streaming or downloaded" across all of your Apple devices, regardless if it's an iPhone/iPod/iPad or desktop/laptop?!

Nope the original stays in placed. It'll just say "matched" for iCloud status. If you look at the "kind" it'll be your original file (MPEG, AAC audio); if it was replaced (meaning you deleted your original file and downloaded the iTunes copy) the "Kind" will say "Matched AAC".

It doesn't stream. It downloads the file to your iDevice, but the file will begin playing as soon as it starts downloading. There is no declaring if you want to stream or download - it all downloads to your iDevice. Your iMac/desktop library stays in tact and all your files remain on your hard drive.)

Uverse has a 250gb cap FYI.
