Has anyone got any tips for getting songs to Match?

I honestly don't understand it how it can find match a full album except for say one or two songs when they are obviously in the iTunes store seen as though it just matched the rest of the album.

I have tried going through the ones which didn't match and naming them exactly how they are on iTunes and then trying to run iTunes match again but that still doesn't get it to Match.

Seems everyone is having these problems. Seems the algorithms which they match the songs with isn't quite on the ball yet. Hopefully they can fine tunes things.

I have a huge amount of tracks missing on very well known albums too, especially the Beatles stuff which is a bummer, I was hoping to replace my old cd rips with some better quality versions too.

Seems to be a lot of discrepancies with regard to track duration. I ripped my Tubular Bells II album again this morning. The entire album matches apart from track one. Apple has the duration of the track down as 3:55, however in reality the track is 8:02. This has to be the reason that it doesn't match. Regrettably there's not much I can do about it.

One would hope that Apple are tracking how many versions of a song, that are present in the iTMS, are uploading and are themselves investigating the issue. Even if it is purely to reduce that wasting of space on the servers.

Yeah I noticed the difference between track duration on some songs too.

It's weird because I have just ripped two albums I have got and on both of them every track matched except the last track on each album.

I sent an email to Apple Support just to see if they had any tips to get tracks matched properly but just got back this.

Dear Ross,

This is Gunasekhar from iTunes Store Customer Support.

I understand that you are unable to find some songs from iCloud. I will do whatever I can to help you right away.

Ross, automatic downloads and the download of previous purchases are two of the iTunes in the Cloud features available now in the U.S.

iTunes Match is still in beta and will be available soon.

Huh? I'm paying to be part of a beta program?

I seriously question the matching logic. I have some tracks of my daughter's voice lessons (one of a kind) that she is taking at school. They 'matched'.

Over the last week, I've been working hard to maximize my matches. Right now I've matched virtually every song I have that's available on the iTunes Store. Here's my workflow:

1) Make sure the song CAN be matched. Some of my albums (for example, Tool's Lateralus) are not available on the iTunes Store, and I would be wasting my time trying to match them. Instead, I've re-ripped them in AAC (256k) format, and made sure they were appropriately tagged before letting them go in the cloud.

2) Compare the song duration with the one listed on the iTunes Store. This is where most of my progress was made: one of the key element that's checked when matching is the song duration, and if it doesn't match to the second, the song gets uploaded instead.

The workaround here is to tag the right length (Right click > Get Info > Options > Stop Time) and to create an AAC version, then delete both the old and new version from iTunes and iCloud and reimport the new length-adjusted version and try to match it. Sometimes, the length seems right but when you look at the "Stop Time" field the song is a couple of milliseconds too long; try to round off the excess length to see if it works.

I was even able to match songs that are on one track on my album but on two tracks on the iTunes Store (for example, The Offspring's Pay The Man / Pretty Fly (Reprise)) by cutting the first half to the right length and matching it and selecting the right portion of the second half and matching it too.

3) If nothing works, try downloading some other version of the song (I guess the legality of it may depend on where you're from, but morally you already paid for the song and you're only trying to match it). I had several tracks of my Queen's Greatest Hits II that would not match event if I cut them to the appropriate length, and I was able to match them by using songs downloaded from a torrent.

Unfortunately, most of the torrents available are CD rips; only on rare occasions have I found iTunes versions of the songs I tried to match.

----------------------------------

The only things I haven't been able to match thus far are shorter versions of a song (I don't know why Damien Rice's Eskimo is longer on the iTunes Store, but I can't get it to match) or songs that are split on my album but on one track on the iTunes Store (I tried to join The Mars Volta's epic Cassandra Gemini and match it, and even though it had the right length, it wouldn't match).

The one thing in KNOW, however, is that although accurate tagging might help speeding up the matching process, it is by no means essential. I had no matching success by simply tagging my songs exactly as the iTunes Store does, even though they were the right songs; the only thing that worked for me was changing the song LENGTH to match the one found on the iTunes Store.

Hope this helps!

Awesome reply vi15 I tried that and managed to get some matched :)

Has anyone had problems with iTunes Match giving you a different version of an album?

For example I had The Eminem Show album and it was all matched and I deleted it and downloaded it from the cloud and the versions of the songs which it downloaded were the clean version when the version which was originally in my iTunes Library was the explicit version so I guess iTunes has matched it with the clean version on the store?

I know some songs don't match but i don't have any problems with letting them upload.

I'm very happy with iTunes match, i have just over 4,600 songs and only 2 weren't eligible, because they are low quality DJ mixes. 5 wouldn't work for some reason and i had to upload about 1,000 songs. Some were oddities but most were old acid house albums / tracks.

I just accept having to upload songs it only took the evening and overnight, i have all of my songs but 7 in the cloud which i'm very happy about.

That's one of the MAJOR problems I've found. I would MUCH rather a track doesn't match than that it falsely matches. Some recordings I did for a friend matched too - they matched with the backing tracks. Please correct if wrong - I'm assuming your daughter's voice lessons were recorder over the backing track for the song. They matched with the backing tracking with no singing.

Ticks me off really bad - one of THE major problems.
