I just purchased itunes match but I think I did so for the wrong reason. It seemed like I could use itunes match to store all of my music on the "icloud" and not have to take up any space on my hard drive with all the music files. But I can't figure it out for the life of me. Is there any way to use itunes match as an online "storage unit" and add files to my itunes library from it so I can free up space on my hard drive by not having my music library locally????

This is something you can do, yeah. Once all your music is matched/uploaded, you could theoretically delete all the local music from your hard drive. In iTunes, you have the ability to stream music (rather than download it locally) if you wish. On iOS devices, any music you play will be downloaded to your device as you play it.
Be wary though that it is a cloud solution, and is subject to all of the usual problems or issues associated with cloud storage.

It's highly recommended that you keep a local copy of your music (unless you have all the media and can rip them again). Things happen. 
There is also no mechanism to add new music directly to your cloud storage. You'd still have to add the files locally, then update Match, then delete the files. A safer way would be to keep your library on an external drive that you connect when you need to add music or make major changes to your library. Then use a second, empty profile attached to your Match account to give you streaming access to your library day in and day out.
