It's great that iTunes match will upgrade your music to 256kbps.

However, if music is converted at higher bitrates, will iTunes Match, downgrade that music???
 
If it's 320k MP3, for instance, 256k AAC is actually better quality.
 
It will if you have iTunes match download the tracks. I had a Depeche Mode album encoded at 320Kbps. iTunes match downloaded the album at 256Kbps. This happens because you have to delete the album in order to have iTunes match download the 256Kbps tracks. If you don't delete them then iTunes Match won't download the matched songs.
