I've had iTunes Match for a few years and always been happy with it. I have 30+ years of collected CD's ripped to FLAC/MP3 loaded into iTunes on my desktop, and then use Match to share it with my iPad, iPhone, Macbook Pro, etc. It's always worked great as long as I have an internet connection.

With iOS 16 and Car Play, when I use the voice controls in my car to play music I know I own, I seem to have been "slammed" into a 7-day trial of Apple Music. They haven't charged me anything yet, and I have no interest in paying for Apple Music so will make sure to kill it before it renews.

Will I be able to use iTunes Match to listen to my music after that? Is voice controlled music via Car Play only allowed if you have a Music subscription? I really don't understand why I've been opted into Music after never agreeing to start a 7-day trial?

I would convert your flac to alac and import into itunes. Then you can synchronize it on your phone and you don't need an internet connection.

You can remote-control the music app via car play more efficient than via voice control and it doesn't need internet either. Siri does. And Siri is really bad at understanding and executing commands or reading back messages. I never used Siri after the initial trials.

My car has no trouble via Car Play recognizing "play album murmur by r.e.m." - works every time I've tried it with numerous albums. Only recently, on a long car trip, it started saying " you have to update your Apple Music subscription to continue with this operation" (or something like that). Then, in the past few days, I suddenly had a 7-day trial for Apple Music (long after that road trip). I chose MP3 because my aging ears can't really tell the difference between lossy and lossless at this point, especially in a car where there's a lot of other ambient noise. It is all in iTunes. I keep the FLAC in the cloud in case I ever need to re-convert to a better format.
