I left my MBA over at my girlfriends house the past couple days so she could use it for some miscellaneous stuff. Well after renting a movie on Itunes last night, it started out fine and dandy but then started freezing and skipping. I tried most everything I could think of to no avail.

The movies will play fine for about 10 to 15 minutes at max and then will continue to start freezing and skipping again, everything else also runs pretty slow in general. I'm not sure if there is a heat problem as the AC at her place is on the crapper and she uses it mostly on her bed, though it looks like the CPU temp never really gets much hotter than 160F.

Im thinking about just doing a clean sweep and reinstalling OS X, I never know what she does sometimes and you never know if there is a hidden problem. Any other ideas? I'm very new to Macs in general and am not sure what the common problems are with MBAs

I had the same problem, but once freezes, freezes the whole computer (not only the video) for 5 seconds, and it repeats over and over. I have installed many times the Leopard, and the same problem. I guess it happens when the computer was getting very hot.
I went to genius bar, they changed every part (except the screen), and the same problem again. Now, I'll receive a new machine.
My hint for you is to install the original system (aclean version without your peronnal account), then, run a movie in FULL SCREEN, and after half hour if the problem happnes, take it to the apple genius bar and complain. There you can proove that it is frezzing. They will replace the parts, but if they can not fix it for the first time, just ask another new machine. ATTENTION: after genius bar made a reppair on my MBA, the screws in the botton of the machine have been loosening day-by-day like a old machine. Fortunatly, I'm waiting for a new one.

I sometimes have this problem when I'm watching a video podcast through Itunes.... I've never experienced this kind of skipping through Quicktime or VLC for that matter... I wonder if it has something to do with the way itunes handles video.

my problem is not consistent, but I notice that sometimes I'll be watching a podcast and then everything stops (freezes) for a couple seconds... and then the podcast starts up again 2 or 3 seconds into the podcast... as in... it still plays the episode while the video is frozen, so I have to scan back to the part where it froze to watch the 2 or 3 seconds that it "skipped"

I want to say that every time this happens the fans are up at 6200... but my temp is never above 70C so... I dunno.

just thought I'd share my experience.

This is just so damn frustrating. I was so happy with my MBA up until yesterday and today. When I brought everything back home. The movie seemed to play fine. So I chalked it up to a temp problem. I figured, I don't have any real documents or anything that I couldn't back up real quick so I went ahead and did a re-install of OS X to clean up any possible problems on that end.

I installed iStat pro and gave it a run with youtube and had a core shutdown after a bit. Gave things a rest for a while and the I started watching the movie in iTunes again and all was well and good until about 1.5 hours into the movie when I checked my temps in iStat and had another core shutdown though it didn't affect playback really like last night. The shutdown didn't happen though until I took a quick look at the temps in iStat.

I have just have no idea what the hell is going on and that is what is frustrating. I don't have an apple store or genius bar that is even reasonably close in my area either. Are there any solutions to the shutdown problem?
