iTunes movies on the iPad

I recently tried to download an HD movie on my iPad only to be told it would take 1433 mins to complete (thats about 1 day). and the number only shrunk down to about 600 mins over time (not 600 mins of time but you get what i mean).

Now on my grand faters FIOS connection I get a much more realistic 143 mins download time but thats still pretty awful.

I can't help but wonder if the movies really are the same 4/5 gigs they are from the iTunes store and if so why isn't apple at least compressing them a bit so that mobile devices can store more than 2 at a time and or download them in a timely maner.

FYI the connection speed difference is pretty grand between my house (7mb down 2mb up) and my grand fathers house (13 mb down 3mb up) however i cant help but think that apple could neutralize this problem in some way as FIOS is only available in so many places

Ok changing modes of complaint. Can we really justify a 1024x768 screen viewing an HD movie that is 4 gigs in size. I am going to try and get an h.264 movie of equal quality that will be more than half the size

iTunes seems to be slammed since the iPad came out. A 4-5 GB movie should take 1-2 hours to download at 7Mbps. I have noticed my iPhone has been downloading apps really slowly from the AppStore lately.

It may seem "silly" to have a 720p movie on a 1024x768 display, but... If you enlarge it so that it fills the iPad's screen, you'll see every pixel. And even 'compressed' down to 1024 x whatever, you're still getting much more detail than 640 x whatever.

If you don't care about the extra resolution, and don't want to bother with the download time, don't buy the HD version! If you really want the HD version for viewing on your computer/AppleTV, then buy it on the computer.

The only use-case I can see is if you're somewhere away from home, like a hotel, and want to use their WiFi to download a movie for viewing now on the iPad, in which case you don't care about the HD part, and yet still have the HD part for viewing at home. This, I can understand. In this case, they should have an option like they do with iTunes Extras and iTunes LPs, where part downloads to the device, and part waits for you to download in iTunes.

Also, when you buy an HD movie, it downloads both the SD and HD versions, so it's not just the larger HD version you worry about, it's that plus the SD copy.
