Itunes needs to be running for home sharing, Really?

If iTunes home sharing is supposed to be a server application, why can't I run it as a process rather than having an application window open? I'm not sure Apple really understands what a server is.

The other issue is having to have an internet connection to listen to/view my own media collection What bright spark came up with that idea?

#1 - You're right. If you remember the old Doublemint gum ads - "It's two, two, two [things] in one!". The app has both a GUI and daemon behavior (latter being server). It's because iTunes has become a monolithic application that deperately needs to be segmented into client and server components.

#2 - I don't know for sure, but I'll bet it's because everything seems to be tied to Apple ID these days. They want to authenticate you and make sure that you should have permission to share media. Again - not sure, just guessing.

Yeah the other one is an authentication and very weak copyright protection thing.

I really hope among hope that iTunes 10.7 sorts out the client/server issue, or even build an iTunes sharing into OS X or the next Airport Extreme, I could live with that.

If you're running windows you can enable itunes to minimize to system tray. That hides it a bit. It's in the 'Advanced' tab of preferences.

Ugh, this pisses me off SO MUCH! Normally I wouldn't care to circumvent DRM, but I'm seriously considering it just to get rid of this irritating problem.

Unfortunately my iTunes server is a G5, the other issue is the odd occasion where I want to play something that's not on my server or Airplay from my MacBook.

Yup and being on an unreliable internet connection doesn't help it at the best of times. As soon as a jailbreak becomes available for the ATV3 I'll be running it.

I don't so much mind having to convert everything for iTunes, it's part of a process that has actually forced me to clean up after myself for once when it comes to my media, but forcing me to have to have an internet connection to play my own content
