Hoping someone can help, I have tried to sync my apple tv with itunes and have exhausted all possibilities. I have tried this on 3 different macs and not sure where I am going wrong. I have followed the instructions given here http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1453 with the exception of re-installing itunes. I have tried this on 2 macbook pro's and 1 macbook all running Leopard with the most current version of iTunes. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

1. Both devices are accessing the wireless network
2. Went into preferences/firewall/checked "Allow all incoming connections"
3. Restarted all devices

Thanks again,
Greg

so, are you saying that you can't even enter the code to pair the two devices?

have you tried to hard-wire them?

Mr. Kram,
No I cannot enter a code. The apple tv generates the code but when I go to iTunes to pair the devices the apple tv does not show up. I have not tried hardwiring, that might work for a temporary solution but not what I would like on a permanent basis. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again
Greg

i only suggest hardwiring as part of the trouble shooting process. if you can hardwire directly from the mac to the atv, that would point to a networking problem to me.

are you sure that the two devices are seeing the same network? are you actually able to access the itunes store on the atv?

Are you running an anti-virus or firewall program other than the built-in firewall program for the mac? A user recently had this problem and the only way an apple technician was able to fix it was to have the user uninstall the firewall program. Even turning it off did no good.

Mr. Kram,
I tried hard wiring from mac to apple tv and still no luck.
Thanks
Greg

Rich1963,
The only program of that type on any of the 3 computers would be software that came from the factory.
Thanks,
Greg

Normally you would plug the AppleTV into the Router (or switch/hub) that you Mac is also plugged into. Is that what you did?

You did not say if your AppleTV can connect to the Internet. I.E. Can you play Movie Trailers? Did you go into Settings / General / Network and check to see if you are getting a valid ipaddress for you local network?

Mike,
Thanks for responding. I did not plug directly into the router its location in relation to the tv does not permit.
It can connect to the internet and play trailers, also getting a valid i.p.
Thanks again,

mike, plugging the cable into a router may be typical, but it would not eliminate the possibility of some sort of network conflict, whether wired or not.

ghaag, since the macbook cannot see the atv even though they are directly connected and since you have no apparent firewall/anti-virus/spyware software, i would guess that the atv may just be defective. i would take it to the genius bar at this point.

My only other suggestion would be to see if you can PING it from your MAC. If you can and iTunes still can't see it then I am lost. If you can't PING it then you have some sort of network problem.

the problem seems to be beyond network related. i'll be that he can ping it, but the the macbooks/itunes don't recognize it as an atv. it just thinks that it's another workstation on the network.

just go to the genius bar. either they will make it work and show us how dumb we are or they will give you a new atv. :D

Apple TV wont connect to itunes

I am having exactly the same problem. I have had the apple tv since its release. No significant problems until recently. The apple tv is connected directly to the router. My iMac connects to the network wirelessly. Connection is variable. Sometimes it connects and sometimes it doesn't. I was thinking it might be a glitch with one of the new software updates.

Here is a screen shot of from Bonjour and it seems to show the apple tv. Not exactly sure how to ping.

Thanks to everyone for their help. I will try to schedule a trip to the genius bar in the next couple weeks (unfortunately its a couple hours away), will let you know what I find out.

Do a factory reset on the Apple TV and start over. Unplug the Apple TV First.
That is what worked for me.

good luck. sucks that the nearest store is so far. the one near me is only 10 minutes away.
