During Steve's iTunes for Windows keynote (or maybe it was during the last one at MWSF...) he mentioned that Apple's goal for iTunes was to sell 100 million songs by its first anniversary. Does anyone know how many they've sold up to this point, the last I remember hearing was 30 million (although the Pepsi promotion will obviously help). Is there a website or something that tracks this, or (more specifically) how many copies of a specific song have been sold?

Well if you take into account the fact that they sold/are selling 100 million songs to Pepsi for their promotion - and that at full retail, I'd say they're way above the 1E+8 mark

Pepsi's only paying them for the songs that get cashed though.

And the redemption rate probably won't be over 50%. Because, sadly enough, there are people that will throw away winning caps because they don't care. I actually found to Pepsi bottles in the recycling bin today at school with caps on them. Of course, I checked both of the caps and they were both winners!

So throwing away winning caps is just fine with me. :D

I can't say that I've seen much of an advertising campaign since the Superbowl ad. Perhaps the average person just doesn't know the promo is happening.

they dont know, they dont care, they dont have a computer, they dont have a computer fast enough, they dont have internet, they dont have broadband, they forget, they lose the caps, they cant find anything they like....

theres a million resons why only 30% will be redeemed.

My money is on that they will come short by about 10 million, Mr Jobs will come out with a "oooh, so close... we nearly made it... a tough target..." speech, with suitable strained expressions to show us how personally he takes it. Then he'll show another pie chart with how big the share of the download market is anyway.

Of course, had Europe been given the chance to contribute things might have been different.

I've seen the ad quite a few times since then and I don't watch a whole hell of a lot of TV. My girlfriend told me it was run 3 times on NBC on Thursday night, their biggest ratings night of the week.

I believe Steve-o was betting on having iTunes Europe available within that year, and that he was counting on those sales to reach thw 100 million mark. Unfortunately, the political issues from copyright laws and corporate music releases seem to be more difficult to iron out than anyone expected.

I would have thought the redemption rate would be more like 10% max. A lot of people buy Pepsi but we must remember is that the computer music download market is still a very niche market. There are many people who don't really use the internet yet, let alone anything as "new-fangled" as downloading music online. The figures are probably better for the US than UK but..

The average Joe (particularly in the older generations) will be unaware of what iTunes is.

Well Napster's only sold 5 million since it opened at the end of October, and it's been a little more than four months, meaning it only sells a bit over a million a month. That actually isn't that bad, but I'm sure Steve will shove this in our faces with (what else) a pie chart, showing how many more iTunes has sold in the same period, then go on to talk about "this GREAT jukebox" and "this GREAT MP3 player" to half-bore everone and heighten their excitement when he gets around to the G5 Powerbooks/Mac OSx 10.4

They can't even use the iTunes Music Store here in the UK mate and internet is about 2 years behind here as well as broadband is still the big new thing.

Kind of OT, as well but Mobile phones here are about 2 years ahead of the U.S. still...kind of funny what's more important--talking to other people or being holed up in a dark room with soda and digital music...Hmmmm...

I was thinking this morning about this actually. Just thinking about how when Steve said that we were going to hit the 100 million mark by April that I felt it was my obligation to contribute to that for some reason. Almost like it was coming down from my boss that these were the goals for our company and I was an employee. It sorta frightened me. But... I really haven't bought any extra songs because of it. For some reason though when he said that I did have this feeling like I would be letting Steve down if I didn't help get us there. Weird... *hides from the Steve police*

I think often times they forget too. I know I have forgotten to keep a free 20oz bottle cap before when it was a winning one...of course not for the iTunes , but just another free soda bottle. I would see that I won, then recap the bottle during the day to keep it from spilling, then recycle or throw away without keeping it. Easy to do.

10%. Cripes !!

[nervously slides the beads of his desktop abacus in a frantic effort justify some sort of outrageous number]

That would mean the pre-Pepsi iTunes users would need to be knocking out as much as 6 million tunes a week!!!

[sits back, nonchalently twiddles thumbs and hopes no-one asks to see his calculations]

Yeah I was referring to us being behind the US in technology and general internet "acceptance". I know full well we don't have the store. I'm ITCHING for the store!

i have seen the adds a number of times, but usually durring prime-time.

but yeah, i looked around on apple's site and couldnt find anything about the latest numbers, how many songs have been sold so far. which might be a bad sign if sales are a little behind steve's estimates.

no doubt though that iTMS is still the #1 retailer of legal online music

Read the News People

One of the Reasons there are no more commercials is because Pepsi is seeing a Redemption rate of over 80% and this comes from the new easy way of seeing if the particular bottle won a song. it is no doubt in my mind, especially judging since i have over 20 free songs already, that Itunes has indeed passed the 100 million mark.

And what's your source for 80%? If that is indeed true, I find that very amusing. Is it my fault that I can see the bottom of the cap? Nope, it's Pepsi's for not putting another half an ounce in the bottle. And is it really a bad thing? I've spent over $40 on Pepsi since the promotion, which is amazing considering I don't drink a lot of pop. And I'll probably end up spending $100-150 when it's all over.

I can hear everyone saying "Why don't you just buy the song!" Because if I use a winner and end up getting a bad song, at least I got some sugared water out of the deal. :D
