iTUNES PC to iTUNES Mac

While waitng patiently for my new G5 - I've been busy burning my CD collection into my cheap $500 HP's Windows iTunes - once I get my G5 it just dawned on me there might not be an easy way to pull it all over so that the PC can go buh bye once the G5 is configured.

Any thoughts on this matter? The computers will be networked through a router - but I've had no luck getting my G3 to talk to my PC this way (OS 9) but I hear OS X may have the power. I also do not want to buy expensive software "Dave" or the like as that is not worth it.

I guess I could just burn a DVD or two with the iTunes data.... maybe?

So given that information.... any ideas or words of encouragement would be appreciated.

OS X networks with Windows easily. You won't have problems with accessing your G5 via Windows. All you need to do is turn on "Windows Sharing" on the G5 and login from the PC.

If you have access to a DVD burner on the PC, that might be the better option. You'll be able to easily transfer the files to the G5, plus you'll have a physical back-up of your iTunes library to boot.

os X makes it prety easy. what OS are you using on the PC? I've had more luck with 2000 and XP under x.3, and more luck w/98 under 10.2.

anyhew, it's very easy. make a folder on your pc to share (you need to turn on file sharing for that to work). then turn on windows sharing on your mac (under network prefs, i think). after about a minute (in my case) your pc will show up on your mac under the network connections (from the sidebar). double click, and pick a folder to mount.

and it often helps to have a password on the folder or entire machine you are networking too... for some reason, it just works out worlds better.

Thank you for your quick replies that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I can't wait to get my new 'puter!

Any thoughts on best format to import songs? I'm using the new Apple 'lossless' format, but have also used ACC AIFF (I think) - not sure real difference they all sound the same. Are they all easy enought to burn custome CDs for my commute traffic vacation every morning - or will the mixed formats come back to haunt me.

Anyone have an opinion on which import format is best with the goal to make new CDs for car every week or so and also to save some space on hard drive for new CDs.

There are two factors that you need to consider when choosing a file format to rip you CDs: file size and sound quality.

Ripping at 128kbps AAC a 4 minute song will be about 4MB and size, and too many will sound as good as the original CD. This is the format used on the iTunes Music Store (although Apple uses protected AAC files with DRM).

Ripping with Apple Loseless will produce larger files (I think around 20MB for 4 minutes, but I've never actually used Apple Loseless so someone correct me if I'm wrong.) However, in exchange for the extra hard drive space the songs will be indistinguishable from the original CD.

AIFF is how the music is stored on the CD, and will be the largest file, at about 40MB for 4 Minutes. The sound quality obviously will be indistinguishable from the CD.

Personally, I like 128kbps AAC files because I don't have the hard drive space to fit anything bigger on my powerbook, and I think the music sounds just fine.
