Okay.. wow they have screwed up the basic stuff so much.

We are NOT on apple music, we are NOT on iTunes match (if that still exists) or anything like that. I'm having issues with duplicates of albums that are purchased on iTunes.

This is on my desktop mac running all the latest updates FYI

I think that there is a "marker" essentially for the tunes in my iTunes for songs in their cloud we have purchased. When you go to move it over to your phone it says you have to download the file, I get this as then you can put the actual file on your phone and dont have to stream or download over cellular.

When we buy the albums are we not buying the actual files anymore!?!? I'm a musician and I need the actual files that I can manipulate etc.

I'm so confused how this is working. If I try to erase one of the files it says the normal:

Do you want to delete the selected song or keep it.... (obviously this is an ACTUAL file on my computer)

If I try to erase the other it says:

Are you sure you want to delete this copy of the selected song...this song can still be played but will be deleted from any devices that are syncing.

I assume this is the "link" (wrong nomenclature) to my purchased file.

I just want the ACTUAL files on my hard drive and dont want to see this duplicate.

Any suggestions? And if i just want the actual file, untethered to any iTunes marker do i have to burn the dang thing to disk and then reimport it or something stupid laborious like that!?!?

Thanks in advance!
