when I search an album in iTunes, if I pull up an album that I have a few songs that I previously purchased, why doesn't it show next to that song that I already purchased? I have a lot of songs and cant remember all that I have, I could possible repurchase same song again?i could have sworn it used to tell you to the right of the song within an album if song was previously purchased???

If you go to the album page, you'd still see the button to the right indicate whether or not you have purchase the song (shown in the photo below). What different for the new iTunes is on the 'Top Songs' page, it is no longer indicate the button the most right as 'play' when song(s) already being purchased anymore. They all just a button with the price of the song. Only way to find out if the song(s) is already in your library, is to hit play sample of the song. If you own the song, it will play from the very start. If not, it will just play the sample.

If you try to buy what you already paid for,the downloads from Apple is always free, and iTunes will ask you if you really want to do another download of what you already got.

Not if you bought a single and iTunes later get rid of it to album only (once full album is up for sale, single album usually being removed). Everything will proceed again just like when you buy songs normally.

Yes,it's only when you try to download exactly the same file from same album it's free.
