iTunes Question

Is it possible to play a .mp3 in iTunes WITHOUT having it added to my library? I have iTunes on both my PC and my PB and I find it extremely annoying that it adds every single audio file that I play into my library.

This is the reason why I can't use iTunes as my default media player in Windows because ever little .wav file or whatever else that gets played through iTunes ends up listed in my library. This is ultra annoying and enough reason for me to stop using it, on my PC at least.

I looked around the sparse options that iTunes provides and I didn't notice any setting to change this.

Overall, Winamp is a much better app than iTunes, as far as I'm concerned.

Hey wow, that was a really helpful post, thanks for contributing. Winamp doesn't run in OSX, so how do you suggest I do that?

what if under itunes you click to not have it organize your files???
or to not copy files to your library... then when your done listening to it... just take it off the playlist...

theres got to be a way...

use column view in the finder and just play it that way

that's the only thing I can think of

and that does annoy me about itunes, as well.

but yeah, if you unclick on add to library, it won't really add it. but you still have to delete it afterwards, which is dumb.

Anyways, go into column view, and click once on the mp3. Then press play in the preview. It's not quite iTunes, but it won't get added to your library.

I recommend using QuickTime on the Mac to play MP3s or other files iTunes can play if you don't want them in your library. I do this whenever I want to loop a song over and over and don't want iTunes to build up the play count for that song. To be quite honest, I never understood the whole media library craze with media players. It seems like many of the modern players have a library. Some examples: Winamp 5 (PC), iTunes (Mac/PC), CocoModX (Mac), etc.

(I'm not on a Mac right now, so I can't tell you the exact procedure, but it goes something like this)

1. Ctrl-click an mp3 in Finder OR select an mp3 in Finder and choose Show Info from the menus.
2. Change from opens with iTunes to opens with Quicktime
3. Make sure you select the option that makes this apply to all mp3's.

Or Edit->View Options and select Date Added, then sort your library by 'Date added for easy deletion of the unwanted tracks.

I guess what you want to do is preview some mp3 you just downloaded, so I should also suggest that you try the Music Store. You get to listen to previews and all downloads are complete and with full quality. (Well, when it gets to Europe that is )
