iTunes responds slowly to media keys

Hi, does anyone know how fix respond times on the media keys when controlling iTunes?

All the other function keys above the numbers on my keyboard respond perfectly, only the media keys (previous/play-pause/next) take a second or 2 to get a response.

Sometimes i'm only running iTunes and it still happens. For a quad-core 15" retina mac this is quite poor.

Do you use Airplay ?

I rarely use Airplay. When I try using the media keys to control iTunes i've got my mac plugged in to some speakers and thats it.
