iPod iTunes stops / starts, has something to do with headphones?

For the last week or so, whenever I plug in my headphones, unplug them, or even accidentally spin the plug around in the laptop's port, my itunes has been doing some strange things. It will stop or start music in itunes, regardless of whether itunes is even selected. If there is a youtube video that I plug my headphones in for, itunes will immediately begin playing whatever the last song selected was. I can't find anything about this in the preferences for itunes. Is there somewhere else I should look? Thanks.
